Team Dresch is an American punk band from Portland , Oregon . The band is one of the most important representatives of Queercore movement and has its roots in the do-it-yourself -Punkbewegung.

history

The band's founder, Donna Dresch , had been active in the then still young queer core movement since the late 1980s. She published her own fanzine chainsaw and also participated regularly in scene- defining fanzines such as outpunk and JDs .

After supporting various bands as a guitarist / bassist (she helped out live with Dinosaur Jr. in 89) in the early 1990s (including Dinosaur Jr. , Screaming Trees ), she finally founded in 1993 together with Jody Bleyle, Kaia Wilson and Marci Martinez the band Team Dresch.

Her first single, Hand Grenade , was released in 1994 on the record label Kill Rock Stars . The 1995 debut album Personal Best , however, was released jointly by Donna Dresch and Jody Bleyle on their own labels ( Chainsaw Records and Candy Ass Records ). The band also organized their concerts themselves, trying to make themselves as independent as possible from the music industry as part of the DIY movement.

Personal Best deals with issues such as homosexuality ("She's Crushing My Mind", "She's Amazing"), homophobia and its consequences ("Fake Fight", "Growing up in Springfield") or Christian conservatism (" Hate the Christian Right ! "). The album, described by critics as a "fiery punk masterpiece", attracted a lot of attention (especially within the LGBT community) because of its strongly politicizing messages and made the band one of the best-known and most controversial representatives of the US political punk scene at the time.

The band also found attention in Germany with their album and gained a certain degree of notoriety after the German indie rock band Tocotronic released the song The Thing with the Team Dresch record on their album We come to complain in 1996 . In the lyrics, Tocotronic show solidarity with the goals and ideals of the band and state that, in their opinion, they can also be shared as a man.

In 1996 the second album Captain My Captain was released on which Melissa York replaced Marci Martinez on drums. A little later, Wilson and York left the band to form The Butchies together with Allison Martlew . Dresch, Bleyle and Martinez continued to work on new recordings (such as the single The New Team Dresch v.6.0 Beta ) together with the newly added guitarist Amanda Kelly, but the band finally broke up in 1998, not least because Dresch was too busy managing her label Chainsaw Records.

In the summer of 2004, the band reunited as part of an appearance at a Queercore festival in Olympia , Washington . In 2006, 2007 and 2009 several concerts followed in the United States .

For 2008, the band had announced the release of a new album and further appearances, but both did not materialize.
