Thorsten Nagelschmidt
Thorsten Nagelschmidt (born June 5, 1976 in Rheine ), mostly only known by the short name Nagel , is the singer, guitarist and lyricist of the punk / alternative rock band Muff Potter . In addition, he is a book author, graphic artist and until 2006 ran a solo project called Friends of the Night / Peace .
Life
Nagel received guitar lessons during his school days, but he broke them off again shortly after beginning. In the early 1990s he began making music as a bass player in the school band Sexton and the Frusties from Rheine. He completed his Abitur at the Kopernikus Gymnasium . In 1993 he was one of the founding members of Muff Potter, whose singer, most important lyricist and guitarist he is.
Until the onset of commercial success for Muff Potter, Nagel made his living doing odd jobs. In addition, from 1995 to 2002 he was the editor of the punk fanzine Wasted Paper . Since 2005, Nagel has been running a solo project called Friends of the Night / Tranquility , where he performs acoustic versions of Muff Potter songs as well as specially created songs and texts. These texts were also the basis for his 2007 novel Wo die wilden Maden dig , in which he describes the life of a singer in a punk band, strongly autobiographical. He went on a reading tour with this novel in 2007, in spring together with the tour biographer of the band Tomte , Hilmar Bender, and at the end of 2007 with Hilmar Bender and Thees Uhlmann under the title Nagel mit Köpfe . In 2009 the audio book on Where the wild maggots dig was published , on which Axel Prahl and Farin Urlaub can be heard as guest speakers.
In 2010, Nagel's second novel What Costs the World was published . In November 2011, linocuts by him were exhibited for the first time in a Berlin gallery .
In 2012, Nagel founded a band with his name. Concerts followed.
In 2018 he published the autobiographical novel The Fall of Hearts about the last year he spent in Rheine, with a focus on the summer of 1999. The framework is the discovery of his old diaries and the trip to his old friends. He recorded the audio book for this himself.
The novel Arbeit , published in 2020, unfolds a polyphonic panorama of the big city by telling of people who work hard in the shadow of Berlin's nightly party life.
