The Kopernikus-Gymnasium is a grammar school in the Westphalian Rheine . It is the youngest of the three regular grammar schools in Rheine and, in terms of the number of students and teachers, the largest.

history

Triggered by an acute shortage of space at the Dionysianum grammar school as a result of the increasing number of pupils, calls for a second grammar school in Rheine arose as early as the 1950s. In July 1957, the city council decided to build another school, which was approved by the Ministry of Culture in January 1961. Construction began in March 1963; in December 1965 the Kopernikus-Gymnasium was officially opened. The Kopernikus-Gymnasium initially followed a scientific-mathematical orientation.

A new building for the cafeteria and media library was completed in 2010.

Bilingual English branch and Copernican branch

Since the school year 1992/1993 the Kopernikus-Gymnasium has had a bilingual branch in English. From the seventh grade onwards, social science subjects or biology are taught in English, with an increased number of English lessons starting from grade six. In the Abitur , the students of the bilingual branch choose English as an advanced course and an English-language subject as a third or fourth Abitur subject if they want to achieve a bilingual Abitur.

In addition to the bilingual branch, the Kopernikus-Gymnasium also offers a Copernican branch with a focus on mathematical and natural science subjects.

whole day

The Kopernikus-Gymnasium has been an all-day school since 2010. The 6th to 9th grades currently have full-time lessons three times a week (9 hours including lunch break and self-study time, until 3:45 p.m.). The 5th grade has 8 hours on these three days including a lunch break and self-study time (until 2:55 p.m.).

Working groups

Outside of the lessons there are various offers at working groups (AGs): among others DELF AG, Artistik- ("Flying Kopis") football u. a. Sports groups, theater group, library group ("reading team"), business English, various math and natural science groups, robotics and electronics groups. The orchestras (wind class, Seven Or More, concert band, big band) and choirs (Kopilicious, Kopi Cantat) are partly as AG, partly as regular lessons (wind class, concert band, Kopi Cantat).

Partner schools

Since the school year 2008/2009, the Kopernikus-Gymnasium Rheine has maintained a partnership with several European schools under the name "Comenius Project":

  • Sotungin Lukiio ja Etälukio in Vantaa / Finland
  • Invicta Grammar School in Maidstone / England
  •  Istituto Tecnico Economico "Enrico Tosi" in Busto Arsizio / Italy
  • Colegiul "Costache Negruzzi" Iași / Romania
  • Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth / England

The Kopernikus-Gymnasium has had a school partnership with the IPPESCH school in Corinto / Nicaragua since 2006, which was founded by the German Father Josef Schendel. The Kopernikus-Gymnasium became aware of the school through the high school graduate Henrik Plüth, one of Schendel's great-nephews. Now the Kopernikus-Gymnasium supports the school in Corinto every year with donations.

Computer science

The Kopernikus-Gymnasium regularly takes part in the national computer science competition. In the 2004/2005 competition, the Kopernikus Gymnasium was recognized as the best German school.
