history

Foundation and first album (2010 to 2012)

Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann (2017)

The foundation stone for the band was laid by the two musicians who are considered to be the core of the band, Philipp "Mammut" Lippitz on guitar and drummer Christoph "Tiger" Bartelt. They started playing together in 2010. After a few rehearsals, Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann joined them, who was originally supposed to be bassist and singer , but soon decided to play guitar. So now Mammut could switch to the bass. The founding fathers of Kadavar come from Thuringia , Münster and Austria .

In an interview, Lupus Lindemann describes the development of the clothing style primarily due to lack of money and the selection of second-hand shops in Berlin. In 2012, the self-titled debut album Kadavar was released , the first edition of which was sold out only through pre-orders before it was released. Due to visa problems, an actually planned tour during a trip to the USA could not take place except for the performance at the Festival South by Southwest . To use the time, the band traveled across the country and shot the video clip for the song Come Back Life .

Abra Kadavar and Berlin (2012 to 2016)

Christoph "Tiger" Bartelt (2017)

In the middle of 2013 bassist "Mammut" left the band. During the last live performances he was replaced by Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup, who was officially introduced as a new member of the band. Bouteloup has also played with the metal band The Oath since the end of 2012 . Their first single was produced by Christoph "Tiger" Bartelt, who is the drummer for Kadavar. The second album Abra Kadavar entered the German charts at number 42. This was followed by a tour of Europe with Wolfmother . On June 6th, 2014 the live album Live in Antwerp was released and Kadavar played the festivals Vainstream Rockfest , Rock'n'Heim and the Hammer of Doom . Kadavar were nominated for the Up and Coming category at the 2013 and 2014 Metal Hammer Awards , but the prizes went to Eskimo Callboy and Insomnium, respectively .

In early 2015, Kadavar began work on their third studio album. Berlin was released on August 21, 2015 and entered the German album charts at number 18. In addition, the band made it into the Austrian and Swiss charts for the first time. Kadavar played at the Rock am Ring and Summer Breeze festivals . A headlining tour through Europe with the support groups The Shrine and Horisont followed in autumn 2015. In February 2016 the band released a free split single with the Finnish thrash metal band Lost Society , before a month later a European tour with Death Alley as well Festival appearances at the Rock Hard Festival , the Graspop Metal Meeting and the Rockavaria followed. In autumn 2016, Kadavar played a co-headlining tour through Europe with Blues Pills and the support act Stray Train .

Rough Times , For the Dead Travel Fast and The Isolation Tapes (since 2017)

Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup (2017)

Then Kadavar began recording their fourth studio album Rough Times , which was released on September 29, 2017 and reached number 30 in the German album charts. In the meantime, the band played at various festivals such as the Rockharz Open Air or the Wacken Open Air . A European tour followed in October 2017 with the support groups Mantar and Stray Train. Kadavar played at the Graspop Metal Meeting and Summer Breeze in the summer of 2018. In addition, the band played in the opening act for Ozzy Osbourne at his last concert in Germany in Oberhausen and in Ludwigsburg as the opening act for the Scorpions .

At the Metal Hammer Awards 2018, Kadavar were nominated in the category Best German Band . However, the award went to the band Kissin 'Dynamite . In autumn 2018 a European tour with Monolord and an appearance at Metal Hammer Paradise followed. In between, the band released the live album Live in Copenhagen on October 12, 2018 , which entered the German album charts at number 95.

Kadavar extended their contract with Nuclear Blast and released their fifth album For the Dead Travel Fast on October 11, 2019 . The album debuted at number eight on the German album charts and number six on the German vinyl charts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Kadavar could not play concerts from spring 2020. The musicians used the time to write a new album on the subject of isolation, change and spiritual development. The album called The Isolation Tapes will be released on October 23, 2020 via the band's own label Roboter Records.

style

Kadavar live at Rock am Ring 2019

Right from the start, Kadavar focused on an authentic implementation of the ideas of Doom, Space - and even Krautrock - and Proto- Metal forefathers of the second row, such as Pentagram , Hawkwind or Grand Funk Railroad . Authenticity from the 1970s is also an important criterion for the recording technology; so it is recorded exclusively live on original equipment of the time. The distribution of the sound tracks (guitar on the left channel, bass on the right, drums on the half right, and vocals in the middle) is called “hard panning” and is intended to reproduce the live performances of the group as faithfully as possible.

Contrary to external claims (e.g. by the label Nuclear Blast , which Kadavar calls "leaders of the German occult rock movement" ), the band does not see itself as an "occult or Satanist rocker".
