Mantar ( . Turk " mushroom ") is a German doom metal - and punk - band from Bremen . A special feature is that the band only consists of two members and does not have a bass player .
history
Foundation and Death by Burning
Mantar was founded in 2012 by Hanno Klänhardt ( vocals , guitar ) and Erinç Sakarya ( drums ). The two musicians are originally from Bremen and have been friends for a long time. The idea for the band name came from Sakarya's Turkish descent. Both musicians were looking for something sonically more unusual than an English word and according to Klänhardt, Mantar would be a hard and catchy word. The band initially had little ambition and only wanted to record a demo with an edition of 50 to 100 cassettes and play a concert in Hamburg. In the early days of the band, both musicians looked for a suitable bass player among their friends
In early 2013 they recorded a demo on their own, which was released in February 2014 on the Finnish music label Svart Records under the title Death by Burning . The album was awarded the Hamburg Music Prize HANS in the category Hamburg Production of the Year . At the Metal Hammer Awards 2014, Death by Burning was nominated for Best Debut , but the award went to Beastmilk for their album Climax . In April 2017, the German magazine Visions listed Death by Burning in their list of the 66 best metal albums of the new millennium.
Ode to the Flame and The Spell
In the summer of 2015 Mantar played at festivals such as the Wacken Open Air , the Hurricane Festival or the Party.San , before the band was signed to the German record label Nuclear Blast in November 2015 . On April 15, 2016 Mantar released her second studio album Ode to the Flame , which entered the German album charts at number 67. The German magazine Visions had Ode to the Flame in their list of 66 + 6 best German metal albums in April 2020.
The band played in summer 2016 at the festivals Summer Breeze , Hellfest , Out and Loud , Rockavaria , Tuska Open Air Metal Festival and Vainstream Rockfest . Mantar was nominated at the Metal Hammer Awards 2015 and 2016 in the Up and Coming category, but the prizes went to Battle Beast and Avatarium, respectively . In 2016, Svart Records released the live album St. Pauli Sessions , for which a concert in Hamburg from 2014 was recorded.
On March 31, 2017, the band a published 10 " - EP The Spell with three previously unreleased songs In the title song Okoi Jones is from. Swiss band Bölzer hear guest vocals The other two songs were originally created for the album. Ode to the Flame This was followed by a European tour with the support groups Deserted Fear and Deathrite and appearances at the Rock Hard Festival , the Party.San, the Brutal Assault and the Rockharz Open Air . At the Metal Hammer Awards 2017, Mantar was nominated in the category Best German , the However, the price went to the band Sodom . In autumn 2017, another European tour followed in the support program of Kadavar .
The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze
After Mantar played at festivals such as Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , Wacken Open Air, Fusion Festival , Graspop Metal Meeting , Metaldays , Greenfield Festival , FortaRock Festival and Maryland Deathfest in summer 2018 , the band released their third studio album The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze . The album went to number seven in the German, number 53 of the Austrian and number 54 of the Swiss album charts. In autumn 2018 Mantar played a European tour with the support groups Skeletonwitch , Evil Invaders and Deathrite
On June 26th 2020 Mantar released the EP Grungetown Hooligang II , which was released on the band's own label Mantarecordings. The EP contains cover versions of different artists from the fields of grunge and noise rock such as L7 , The Jesus Lizard , Sonic Youth , Mazzy Star , Babes in Toyland , Mudhoney and 7 Year Bitch .
style
Mantar only use guitar and drums for their music. Simple melodies , rhythms and riffs are typical for Mantar . Hanno Klänhardt does not play guitar solos and told the German magazine Metal Hammer that Mantar deliberately limit themselves and remain primitive. According to Klänhardt, Mantar is not a classic metal band and the musicians are also not interested in typical metal “ clichés ” such as blastbeats or double bass . The band doesn't want to meet the requirements of a certain scene or subculture , but rather “just knocks” according to Klänhardt. Klänhardt uses the technique of screaming for singing . The band names artists like the Melvins , Darkthrone and Motörhead as inspiration .
Mantar is commonly associated with the Doom Metal and Punk genres in the press. James Christopher Monger from Allmusic named Black Metal as a genre, while Arne Helms from the German magazine Visions classified the band in the genre of crustpunk . Occasionally mantar is also referred to as a sludge , but this is rejected by the band.
