The Fusion Festival (pronunciation: [ 'fjuːʒən ], also written in Cyrillic : ФУЗИОН) is a German music festival with cultural accompaniment such as theater, art installations and performance art .

It has taken place every summer since 1997 on the former military airfield in Lärz near Lake Müritz ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ) and usually extends over four days (Thursday to Sunday) with around 70,000 visitors. The predecessor of the festival was called "U-Site-OA" and took place in 1996 with around 800 guests. The festival sponsor is the Kulturkosmos Müritzsee e. V.

concept

Festival site

According to the organizers, the aim of the merger is “holiday communism”. Far away from society, a parallel society should emerge that should be free from constraints and controls. According to their own statements, the organizers attach great importance to mutual tolerance and an environmentally friendly and non-commercial orientation of the festival. There are no major sponsors and no advertising on the festival site. Only vegetarian and vegan dishes are offered on the festival site .

Because of this positioning and the avant-garde art, the fusion is sometimes referred to as the European “ Burning Man Festival”. Also installations from Burning Man've been seen on the merger, such as "Charon" by Peter Hudson .

music

The program covers almost the entire range of electronic music , such as minimal , techno , house , drum and bass , dubstep , breakbeat , dub , (progressive) trance and Goa . However, hip-hop , jazz , songwriting , rock , punk , metal , polka , ska and reggae as well as dancehall , and to a lesser extent klezmer and more specialized music styles such as Finnish tango and other live music are also on offer. There is also a diverse theater, cabaret, radio play and cinema program, as well as performances and live installations.

Event site

The Lärz airfield was abandoned by the Russian army in 1993 . The site was opened on April 30, 2003 by the association Kulturkosmos Müritzsee e. V. bought. There are twelve former aircraft hangars that are overgrown with lawns. As green hills, they give the site an unmistakable character and enable an extensive program even in bad weather. There is no structural separation between the camping area and the festival area. According to the association's board member Martin Eulenhaupt, the external fences had to be doubled due to "several thousand ticket lots" that climbed over the fences in 2013.

Controversy about the security concept 2019

Since 2013, a security concept has been required in order to obtain approval for the event. At the beginning of May 2019, the President of the Neubrandenburg Police Headquarters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Nils Hoffmann-Ritterbusch , announced that the festival's security concept did not meet the new police requirements. Among other things, there is no adequate escape and rescue route plan. In addition, a police station must be set up on the site. He turned down a compromise offer from the festival organizers for a guard next to the site. The police's deployment concept for the festival, which had already been drawn up two months earlier, provided for clearing tanks , water cannons and up to 1000 officers with “ evidence preservation and arrest units ” as well as “technical measures to open and release”. The organizers launched an appeal that over 130,000 people signed within a few days. After Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Interior Minister Lorenz Caffier stepped in and the organizers presented a new security concept, the festival was approved. As in previous years, a guard should be stationed directly at the festival area; the officers should have unhindered access to the site as required.

Cancellation of the 2020 festival

On April 9, 2020, the organizers announced that the festival planned for the summer would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . According to the organizers, the festival was already sold out with around 70,000 tickets.

Social Commitment

The Kulturkosmos Müritz association supports youth culture projects and school projects in cooperation with the neighboring communities.

He acquired 1.8 hectares of land on Gaarzer Strasse in Lärz. In December 2018, he gave away a 2500 square meter part of the property to the community so that they can build a daycare center on it, since the previous building would have to give way to a new building.
