Skeletonwitch is an American black / thrash metal band from Athens (Ohio) .

Band history

Skeletonwitch was founded in 2003 by the two brothers Chance (vocals) and Nate Garnette (guitar). The first line-up also consisted of Scott Hedrick (guitar), Jimi Shestina (bass) and Derrick Nau (drums). The group made a name for itself through numerous appearances in the underground and released the DVD-R Skeletonwitch - Live, Friday the 13th 2004. In the same year, the debut album At One with the Shadows followed as an in-house production. A demo distributed at the group's concerts followed in 2005. In 2006 the group released the EP Worship the Witch , the first release with new bass player Eric Harris.

In 2007 the album Beyond the Permafrost was released on Prosthetic Records . This was followed by appearances in supporting act for Municipal Waste , Job for a Cowboy , Amon Amarth , Dimmu Borgir in 2008 and with Children of Bodom and The Black Dahlia Murder in 2009. In 2008 Skeleton Witch played at the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest , and a year later at Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta and the South by Southwest Festival in Texas. Glenn Danzig also selected the group as the opening act for his Blackest of the Black tour.

Breathing the Fire was released on October 13, 2009 with Evan Linger on bass. The album was produced by Jack Endino and mastered by Scott Hull ( Pig Destroyer ). In July 2010 the label uploaded the song Crushed Beyond Dust to the download page for the game Rock Band . In summer 2010 the Ozzfest followed , a headlining tour through Europe with the support groups Warbringer and Angelus Apatrida and a support tour for High on Fire in Canada.

During a tour in October 2014, singer Chance Garnette stopped standing at the microphone. A few days later, Garnette had to answer for assault in a court in Worcester, Massachusetts . On the following European tour in March 2015, Garnette was replaced by Andy Horn from Cannabis Corpse and a short time later it was announced that the band had fired Garnette for his alcohol abuse . In February 2016, Adam Clemans, singer of the band Wolvhammer and former Veil of Maya , was introduced as a new member.

style

Prosthetic Records describe the style of Skeletonwitch as an " amalgam of classic Bay Area Thrash, Scandinavian Death / Black Metal and NWoBHM ". Singer Chance Garnette alternates between high-pitched screeching vocals typical for Black Metal and deep, guttural growling. The music is played very quickly, but still contains classic NWoBHM guitar riffs.
