Babes in Toyland was a punk band that formed in Minneapolis in 1988 .

Band history

Kat Bjelland, band founder, guitarist, singer and songwriter who formerly formed the band Sugar Baby Doll with Courtney Love (later in the band Hole ) and Jennifer Finch (later L7 ) , was born on December 9, 1963 in San Francisco . Babes in Toyland consisted of Kat Bjelland, Lori Barbero on drums and Michelle Leon on bass after Sugar Baby Doll broke up over arguments between Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland, with Kat Courtney being kicked out of the band a few times before. However, Babes in Toyland also broke up, but survived longer than Hole. Kat Bjelland then formed a new band called Katastrophy Wife . In autumn 2014 a reunion of the band with Maureen Herman on bass was announced, followed by several concert appearances in spring 2015.

style

The babes' music was a little different from that of many other riot grrrl bands such as Bikini Kill or Bratmobile . The striking drums, the sometimes unusually rough guitar riffs (with some grunge influences), the aggressive singing of Kat and the angry lyrics combined with innocent doll clothes outfits and the attitude of punk were stylistic devices with which the band addressed the concerns of the riot- Grrrl movement expressed in their own way.
