For the Dead Travel Fast -

For the Dead Travel Fast is the fifth studio album of the German psychedelic rock - band Kadavar . It was released on October 11, 2019 via Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

At the beginning of 2019 the band started working on their new album. After a few weeks in the studio, the musicians traveled to Romania to take photos of the band in front of Bran Castle , the “ Dracula's Castle ” . Among other things, the album cover as well as ideas for music and the content of the lyrics were created here. According to drummer Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt, work on For the Dead Travel Fast was only going slowly. But the break in Romania gave the band new inspiration. In April 2019 the band extended their contract with Nuclear Blast, which had expired after three studio albums.

Was recorded For the Dead Travel Fast in the band's own studio Blue Wall. It is located in the Berlin district of Neukölln , close to Sonnenallee and the Neukölln shipping canal . The previous album Rough Times was recorded here, but the studio was not yet finished at the time. Among other things, the band used radio technology manufactured by Siemens from the 1960s. According to Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt, the band “was able to realize their ideas better than ever before, especially thanks to the new control room”. The song Saturnales was sung by bassist Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup. For the Dead Travel Fast was produced, recorded and mixed entirely by the band .

The album was originally due to be released on September 20, 2019. For the song The Devil's Master , a music video was shot on the island of Fuerteventura , in which the actress Lucie Aron can be seen alongside the musicians . There were other music videos for the songs Children of the Night and Demons in My Mind .

The album title comes from the ballad Lenore by Gottfried August Bürger . On the trip to Romania the musicians got the idea to write lyrics about old legends and horror films . The band referred in particular to horror films from the 1970s and specifically to the film Nosferatu - Phantom of the Night by Werner Herzog with Klaus Kinski as the leading actor.

“What kind of people is horror anyway, and how human are these characters in the end? […] There is probably a Klaus Kinski in each of us. We just don't let him out as far as he does. "

- Christoph "Tiger" Bartelt

According to drummer Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt, the song The Devil's Master is about “people's worst ideas, the attraction of horror and the seductive scent of the infamous”. Just as it is “all too human to feel at the mercy of one's fears, so it seems understandable to give in to the fascination of evil in the face of death”. It is also about the idea of evil in different cultures. In the accompanying music video, according to Christoph “Lupus” Lindemann, “everyone would fight each other”, but “in the end nobody would win”.

According to Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt, Poison is an appeal to “always critically question sources of information and form one's own opinion”. A lot of supposed information would be “poisoned”. As an example, he cited AfD politicians who are particularly good at repackaging the truth in their own way. The song Long Forgotten Song was originally supposed to appear on the second studio album Abra Kadavar , but it didn't work out. In the meantime the song fell into oblivion and was brought out again when the band was missing a song for the current album. Lyrically the song is a look back at the naive early days of the band.

reception

For Jonas AM Erbaş from the online magazine Metal.de , For the Dead Travel Fast is the best Kadavar album so far, "considering the number of hits, the great songwriting and the audible development of the band". The album has "almost no weaknesses and in terms of atmosphere, creativity and sound puts a truckload on the already successful predecessor Rough Times " and "basically has the potential to make KADAVAR immortal". Erbaş awarded nine out of ten points. Holger Stratmann from Rock Hard magazine highlighted the “surprisingly varied structures of the songs in detail”, which “just don't deliver the classic verse / refrain / solo pattern”. The production would be "as usual imperfect, raw and full". Only the well-intentioned Long Forgotten song "seems a bit like a foreign body on the album". Stratmann awarded 8.5 out of ten points.

Daniel Lindhorst from the online magazine Powermetal.de wrote that "the instruments, recorded live as usual, and the old-school production without any excessive crackling or similar nonsense create a real proto-feeling" and "make the overall concept of the trio so extremely coherent". With a sideways glance at the titles Saturnales and Long Forgotten Song , "the bearded people would perhaps do well to think about a slightly longer distance to the upcoming long-player". Lindhorst awarded 7.5 out of ten points.
