Berlin is the third studio album by the German psychedelic rock band Kadavar . It was released on August 21, 2015 via Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

After the release of the previous album Abra Kadavar , the band was on tour for around a year and a half. The musicians took a short break and started working on their third album in January 2015. For the first time the three of the band wrote the new music because the new bassist Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup, unlike his predecessor, got involved in the songwriting. In addition to Bouteloups influences such as B. Hawkwind , the musicians oriented themselves more to bands like MC5 , The Stooges or The Damned than to Pentagram or Saint Vitus .

“We had the feeling that we had worked through that. However, we didn't feel like doing a third album of this kind and reading something from Black Sabbath in every record review. "

- Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann

Another difference to the previous albums are the shorter songs, which were usually six to seven minutes long before. For Berlin , the musicians aimed for around four minutes long songs that, according to Lindemann, should be “straightforward and catchy”. The album was recorded by Ingo Krauss in the Candybomber Studio in Berlin . The studio is located on the site of the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport . Again the album was recorded live. Only the vocals and some guitars were added later via overdub . With Reich der Träume the band recorded a cover version of a song by the German singer Nico .

The album was mixed by Pelle Gunnerfeldt. Initially, the musicians were looking for a German producer, but could not find a suitable candidate. According to Christoph “Lupus” Lindemann, Gunnerfeldt was chosen because he produced the first Hives albums, which sounded “dirty but at the same time poppy”.

The album title refers to the city of Berlin as the adopted home of the three musicians from Thuringia , Münster and France . Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann described the city as a retreat for the band. With the title he wants to express that the residents perceive Berlin in different ways.

“We live in Neukölln and have problems that the people in Charlottenburg don't know. Everyone sees the city in their own way and takes their part. The history of the city, the fast pace of the past twenty years, generates an energy and a momentum of its own that is inspiring. "

- Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann

The LP version of the album illustrates this approach. The album cover shows a young woman wearing glasses . The glasses are punched out. The inner shell shows various motifs, which can be used to change the reflection of the glasses. The band took the album Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin as a model.

Reviews

Ben Klein from the German magazine Metal Hammer gave the album a top grade of seven. The band would “convince with twelve pulverizing songs”, “have the greatest respect for the formative works of the past” and “do not forbid their own creativity”. Holger Stratmann from the German magazine Rock Hard described Berlin as a "direct hit". Especially "in the first half one strong number follows the other". Since the band “plays rock dry as dust naturally from the gut”, Stratmann awarded eight out of ten points. Sven Lattemann from the German online magazine Metal.de praised the band for “not just being satisfied with maintaining the musical condition of the previous albums, but with adapting them carefully and prudently”, for which he awarded eight out of ten points.

Chart placements

Berlin entered the German album charts at number 18, with the band exceeding the success of the previous album. For the first time, Kadavar made it into the Austrian and Swiss album charts. The album debuted at number 56 in Austria and at number 88 in Switzerland.
