The Flaming Sideburns is a Finnish rock band formed in Helsinki in 1995 .
Band history
Eduardo Martinez moved from Argentina to Finland, where his mother was from, in the late 1980s / early 1990s. He joined the Scandinavian rock scene , which at that time consisted of the Hellacopters , Turbonegro and The Soundtrack of Our Lives , among others . His first band was Jack Meatbeat and the Underground Society , who debuted on Trash Can Records in 1991 and released their first album in 1994. A year later Martinez started The Flaming Sideburns with Ski Williamson (guitar) and The Punisher (bass), Jeffrey Lee Burns (guitar) and Jay Burnside (drums). They quickly made a name for themselves as a live band in Finland. So would her debut album Bama Lama Boogaloo! (1997) also released a live album directly.
In 1999 the actual debut album It's Time to Testify… Brothers and Sisters was released . Their successful phase only followed with their second album Hallelujah Rock'n'Rollah , which entered the Finnish Top 20 and made the band known internationally. The band also performed on the Roskilde, among other places . Shortly thereafter, Junnu "Johnny Volume" replaced Alajuuma Arimatti "Jeffrey Lee Burns" Jutila, who had less and less time for the band due to his fatherhood and a move to the United States. But Arimatti only stayed three years and was replaced in 2003 by Petri “Peevo de Luxe” Peevo. The album Sky Pilots , which was produced by Jürgen Hendlmeier , subsequently reached number 3 in the Finnish charts, her greatest success so far. In 2006 a collection of rarities called Back to the Grave followed , which was continued in 2008.
In 2007 her last studio album Keys to the Highway was released , which reached number 15. Then it became quiet about the band. It wasn't until 2016 that the quintet returned with a single called Heavy Tiger .
Music genre
Flaming Sideburns play straight rock'n'roll, as it is known in the Scandinavian scene around Turbonegro, Gluecifer and The Hellacopters. On the first albums in particular, you are clearly influenced by the garage rock scene of the 1960s / 1970s. With Hallelujah Rock'n'Rollah , however, the band continued to develop and took on various other influences in the music. The early Red Hot Chili Peppers should be mentioned as an influence, as well as bands like The Royal beat Conspiracy , The Soundtrack of Our Lives, but also classics like The Rolling Stones or MC5 . They also take elements from blues rock , psychedelic rock , country & western and soul , although the focus is on fast, straightforward songs. Martinez's voice is hoarse and scratchy. It is particularly reminiscent of a mixture of Aerosmith and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
