The Hellacopters is a Swedish band that play fast, melodic hard and sleaze rock with rock 'n' roll influences. The group is considered an important "new" rock band in Scandinavia. Alongside Gluecifer , Turbonegro and the Backyard Babies, it represented the fourth pillar of Scandinavian rock that broke loose in the mid-1990s. After the breakup in 2008, the reunification with the original cast was celebrated in 2016 with an exclusive appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival .

Band history

In 1994 the Hellacopters were founded in Sweden . The founding members were former Entombed -Schlagzeuger Nicke Andersson (guitar, lead vocals) and the three former Entombed - Roadies Kenny Håkansson (bass), Robert Erickson (drums) and Andreas Tyrone Svensson (guitar, vocals), the lead guitarist of the Swedish band Backyard Babies is. In 1996 the debut album Supershitty to the Max was created! that was recorded and mixed in just three days . With this album the band was able to establish itself for the first time in the series of Scandinavian retro rockers. With the 1997 album Payin 'the Dues , the band also had success in the USA. After the Hellacopters had recorded the EP Disappointment Blues in 1998 , guitarist Dregen left the band to devote himself exclusively to his old band, the Backyard Babies. After a short period of line-up changes in the now vacant position of guitarist (including keyboardist Anders Lindström ), Robert Dahlqvist (including Thunder Express) got the job. With him, the Hellacopters recorded the albums Grande Rock , High Visibility , By the Grace of God and Rock & Roll Is Dead . After Svensson's departure, bandleader Nicke Andersson increasingly oriented himself towards a bluesy, soulful retro sound, which was most clearly processed on the album Rock & Roll Is Dead and replaced the rough, unpolished punk sound of the early days.

The Hellacopters made a name for themselves worldwide and played in the opening act for the Rolling Stones and KISS , among others .

On June 26, 2007, their single The Same Lame Story was released exclusively as a CD supplement to the Swedish music magazine Denimzine on the Swedish market. In July this single was also released as a 7 " record on Bootleg Booze Records .

On October 13, 2007, the band announced that they would split up after the release of their seventh regular studio album and a European tour. The album was released in April 2008 and is called Head Off . The farewell tour followed in September and October 2008.

The farewell concert marathon, which comprised a total of four concerts in two days, was broadcast as a live stream on Myspace .

On November 3, 2015, the band announced on their Facebook page that the original line-up had joined forces for the 20th anniversary of the first album "Supershitty to the Max!" will reform for a one-off appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival in June 2016. Guitarist Robert Dahlqvist died on February 3, 2017 at the age of 40.

On June 28, 2017, the band performed at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark , where founding member Dregen took the place of the late Dahlqvist on guitar again. Other concerts followed, including in the opening act for the Rolling Stones on October 12th in Stockholm. Further dates for 2017 and 2018 have already been announced on the band's Facebook page.

style

Their music was inspired by rock, soul, garage and rock 'n' roll bands from the 1960s and 70s such as Kiss and MC5 . The songs were mostly written by Nicke Andersson, but also by Eriksson, Dahlqvist, Lindström and Håkansson.

Side projects

Andersson nodded while performing with Imperial State Electric

Some of the band members founded a large number of other bands and side projects, either abandoned or partially “helped”. Nicke Andersson already played with Scott Morgan, the former singer of the Sonic's Rendezvous Band, together with the Hydromatics , and now with "The Solution", where he sits behind the drums again like with the metal band "Death Breath". Nicke Andersson can also be heard on the Boozed One Mile album with a guest contribution. Drummer Robert Erickson founded the Swedish garage band "The Sewergrooves". Guitarist Robert Dahlqvist played in the guitar band "Thunder Express". Keyboard player Anders Lindström occasionally appears as guitarist for the glam rock band "Diamond Dogs", which also still releases albums.
