Sleaze Rock (also Sleaze Metal or simply Sleaze ) is a variety of Glam Metal that became popular in the USA from the late 1980s . From the mid-1990s, there was another wave of sleaze rock bands, most of them from Scandinavia . Some similarities and overlaps exist to Glam Metal, whose bands, however, cultivated a different image and were musically far less harsh.

term

The name "sleaze" and the adjective "sleazy" denote something in English that is "shabby" and belongs to the scraps. The term sleaze rock is mainly derived from the image of the so-called sleaze rock bands, who cultivated an underdog mentality and visually presented themselves as rebellious and non-conformist, with lots of tattoos , torn leather jackets and ripped jeans, mesh shirts, cowboy boots or motorcycle boots and long hair that looks rather unkempt, in contrast to glam metal.

criticism

The sleazerock fashionable term was simply to present something that had already been there in new packaging. The bands categorized as Sleaze , such as Guns N 'Roses , played mainly hard rock mixed with elements of blues rock , metal , garage rock and punk rock . In particular, newer bands like the Backyard Babies , some of which are dominated by punk elements, are also classified as punk 'n' roll . In general, today's sleaze rock bands mostly refer to the rawer Glam Metal of the early eighties. According to Martin Sweet, guitarist of Crashdïet , glam metal has become "too poppy" and punk has disappeared. In addition, the Dictators , AC / DC , Mötley Crüe , WASP , Hanoi Rocks and the New York Dolls are considered forerunners and sources of inspiration for the Sleaze bands .
