The New York Dolls (. English New York Dolls ) is a glam rock - band of the early 1970s and forerunner of the later punk movement . Influenced by the Detroit bands MC5 and The Stooges , the "Dolls" shaped an entire era of musicians and bands such as the Hanoi Rocks , The Damned , The Boys and the Sex Pistols , whose manager Malcolm McLaren had worked with the Dolls for some time.

history

The New York Dolls were founded in 1971. The front man was David Johansen , who is similar to Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones , guitarist Johnny Thunders had Keith Richards as a role model. Arthur "Killer" Kane was a bass player. Founding member and further guitarist was Rick Rivets , who left the band in 1972 and was replaced by Sylvain Sylvain . Drummer Billy Murcia died of a heroin overdose while touring England in November 1972. When recording the first album, Jerry Nolan was already on the drums.

The band performed mainly in the Mercer Arts Center , a club in the building of New York's Broadway Central Hotel, or in Max's Kansas City , where they gave energetic shows in travesty-like costume with dresses, high-heeled shoes and tights. Singer Johansen often appeared disguised as Greta Garbo or hung herself with thick necklaces. The band also played short songs with hard rock riffs.

The New York Dolls released two studio albums on Mercury Records : 1973 the LP New York Dolls and 1974 Too Much Too Soon . Despite a European tour, a television appearance on The Old Gray Whistle Test and a general positive response from music journalists, the albums only reached the bottom of the charts, while the band received unrestricted attention live. The new manager of the band was Malcolm McLaren, but the commercial success remained. Additionally, Nolan's and Thunders' drug excesses damaged the group's cohesion, which led to both of them leaving the band in 1975. Johansen and Sylvain continued to perform as New York Dolls with changing musicians until they went their separate ways in 1977.

After the dissolution

Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan founded The Heartbreakers in 1975 and worked as soloists after their dissolution. Thunders died in 1991 as a result of his drug addiction. Nolan followed him a few months later. David Johansen appeared in the 1980s under the pseudonym "Buster Poindexter". In 1985 he was seen as a guest actor in an episode of the television series Miami Vice . Johansen also worked in the movies The Ghosts I Called , Tales from the Shadow World (1990) and Freejack - Hostage of the Future . Syl Sylvain also started a solo career.

Reunion 2004

At the instigation of the British singer Morrissey , the New York Dolls reunited in 2004. Johansen, Sylvain and Kane - supported by drummer Gary Powell, guitarist Steve Conte and Brian Koonin on keyboards - gave two concerts at the Meltdown Festival in London, which were subsequently released on DVD. Arthur Kane died of leukemia on July 13, 2004.

On July 28, 2006, the New York Dolls released a new studio album, One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This , on Roadrunner Records in Germany. Of the original members, David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are still in the band. The band regularly gives concerts, most recently at the Lokerse Festival in Lokeren (Belgium) in 2008.
