The Heartbreakers were a punk band from New York .
history
The Heartbreakers was founded in New York in May 1975 by guitarist Johnny Thunders and drummer Jerry Nolan , both of whom had left the New York Dolls , and bassist Richard Hell , a former member of Television . After a few appearances, guitarist Walter Lure (1949-2020) was added. In 1976, Hell was replaced by Billy Rath . Hell formed his own band Richard Hell and the Voidoids .
When the UK punk scene was at its peak, The Heartbreakers were there and played several concerts in London . The Sex Pistols became aware of them and they were taken on the "Anarchy Tour" as the opening act, along with The Clash and The Damned . A short time later they signed a record deal with "Track Records" and recorded their debut and only studio album, LAMF . During the final mix there was a dispute between the band members and the band broke up. LAMF stands for Like a MotherFucker .
The band got back together for a farewell concert at Max's Kansas City nightclub in New York; except for drummer Jerry Nolan, who was replaced by Ty Stix . The result was the album Live at Max's Kansas City '79 . At live concerts, in addition to the tracks from their studio album, the band mainly played songs by the New York Dolls or tracks that Johnny Thunders had written during his time as a soloist.
Until the death of Johnny Thunders, the band came together again and again for isolated concerts. Jerry Nolan died on January 14, 1992 of bacterial meningitis and a stroke. Richard Hell primarily devoted himself to his poetry and spoken word appearances. Walter Lure continued to make music and performed regularly with his band The Waldos , which mainly play Heartbreakers songs. Billy Rath (1948–2014) died on August 16, 2014 of complications from cancer. With the death of Walter Lure in August 2020, the last surviving member of the Heartbrakers in the original line-up died.
