The Thorpe Park (also THORPE PARK Resort ) is a seasonal amusement park near the village of Chertsey , in the county of Surrey , United Kingdom . It was built in 1979 on the site of a former gravel pit that was flooded to create a water theme park. In 1987, the Rapid River Thunder River (German: Donnerfluss) was opened, which is now called Rumba Rapids . Meanwhile, Thorpe Park has a steadily increasing number of roller coasters , including the record holder Colossus with ten rollovers and Stealth , the fastest roller coaster in Europe when it opened. The park's other attractions are also geared towards a younger audience who prefer wilder rides. The so-called "thrill rides" predominate. The total area amounts to about 2 km² .

The amusement park is owned by the British Merlin Entertainments Group , which also operates several amusement parks in Germany such as Legoland in Günzburg or Heide-Park Soltau .
