action

In 2009 the US is economically impoverished and highly polarized. Public order is only maintained in the residential areas of the rich, mostly by private security services. Other areas are considered unsecured zones . Technological progress makes it possible to first transfer the consciousness of a dying person into a database, called a “ Spiritual Switchboard ”, and then within a short time to the body of another. For this purpose, the bodies of accident victims who, depending on the situation, are often medically healthy and not missed, are brought into the future at the moment of death by means of time travel. This very profitable business for its operator Ian McCandless was carried out by McCandless Corp. made the world's most influential society.

The racing car driver Alex Furlong had an accident during a race in 1991 in which his racing car was completely burned. The "bone hunter" Victor Vacendak brings him shortly before that into the year 2009. This is done on behalf of the recently deceased McCandless, who was transferred to his own switchboard and now needs a new body within a few days. McCandless still appears to the outside world and to his employees in the form of electronically generated film collages, thus pretending to be on a world tour. McCandless hopes with his new young body to win over his employee Julie, who was friends with Alex until his supposed death in 1991.

Since Alex was fetched a few fractions of a second too early and is therefore still alive, he can escape when the "bone hunters" try to correct this "mistake". This makes him a " Freejack ", and he will later receive a highly attractive bounty of 10 million US dollars. Since he cannot find his way in the new surroundings, he takes refuge in a church , where a self-confident nun provides him with advice and a pistol. Alex desperately wants to find his girlfriend, whom he last saw - in his sense of time - a few days ago. To do this, he gets in touch with a former friend who betrays him. After several attempts, Alex manages to get in touch with Julie. They are surprised by Vacendak. Vacendak is separated from his crew in the subsequent pursuit of Alex and is targeted by several heavily armed men. Alex shoots them and saves his life. As a thank you, he is given a 5-minute lead on his next escape.

In the meantime, the Vice President of McCandless Corp., Mark Michelette, who was the only one who knew of McCandless' demise and who would become President of the company after his final death, had also started the search for Alex. Michelette finds out the connection between Alex and Julie and had also put the muggers on Vacendak, because he wants to prevent McCandless from "continuing to live" at all costs.

When trying to get into the McCandless Corp. intruding, Alex is caught and the electronically stored personality of McCandless is played in his brain. Michelette interrupts this process. Despite the incomplete transfer, Alex declares that he is now the owner of McCandless' personality. To confirm, he gives McCandless' personal code number, which Vacendak accepts. Vacendak's men shoot Michelette before he can fire at Alex. Alex then goes on a drive with Julie. Vacendak stops the car on the way. He explains to Alex that McCandless couldn't drive a car and that the personal code number was wrong “... not even close”, but then lets Alex and Julie drive on.

Awards

The film received three nominations for the Film Awards Saturn Award : Best film, for the best costumes and Rene Russo as a performer.

Reviews

“Director Geoff Murphy (' Quiet Earth ') lacks originality. Conclusion: Good actors who seem underchallenged. "

“Science fiction film that sketches a future in lavishly designed settings in which a few people are rich and powerful, but most of them are impoverished and sick due to environmental disasters; This gloomy vision of the future is lost in a multitude of actions and chases and is given away entirely by the colorless leading actor.
