Robert Sheckley

Robert Sheckley (born July 16, 1928 in Brooklyn , New York City , † December 9, 2005 in Poughkeepsie , NY) was an American writer . He is considered one of the most humorous storytellers in science fiction literature.

Life

Robert Sheckley grew up in New Jersey . After high school and various jobs as a gardener, salesman and bartender, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea . He was employed there as an editor for a troop newspaper and as a guitarist in an Army dance band. After military service, he attended New York University, where he studied English, psychology and philosophy. During this time Sheckley began writing science fiction stories and sold them to various SF magazines (the first story printed Imagination ). In 1951 he decided to become a freelance writer and wrote crime novels, thrillers and SF. From 1970 he lived in Ibiza , from 1977 to 1980 in London , before returning to the USA. From 1979 he worked as a literary editor for the renowned magazine Omni and had guest lectureships at various universities.

Sheckley was married several times: to Barbara Scadron (1951–1956), Ziva Kwitney (1957–1972), Abby Schulman (1972-), Jay Rothbell and Gail Dana (from 1990).

Robert Sheckley died in Poughkeepsie, NY, in December 2005, at the age of 77 of a brain aneurysm .

Sheckley achieved his greatest fame in the SF scene with his often humorous short stories , of which he wrote more than 200 during his life and some of which provided the templates for films such as The Millionaire Game or The Tenth Sacrifice . Often saturated with satire and irony, his texts didn’t stop at teasing conventional SF ideas and often held up a cynical mirror to reality. In Hunting Problem , he tells of aliens who, as a test of courage, are supposed to hunt the fur of a particularly wild animal - an astronaut's spacesuit. The Robot Who Looked Like Me describes how people who are short of time keep sending robot copies of themselves to their rendezvous - until the robots run away with each other. And Plague Circuit describes how time travelers trigger epidemics in order to keep overpopulation in check - the story closes with the words "... sometimes it's hard to be a gardener for humanity."

For the short story A Suppliant in Space. (1973, German as a supplicant in space and a first contact ) he received the Jupiter Award in 1974. His life's work as an SF author was honored with the I-CON Award in 1992 . In 2001 he was honored as a writer emeritus at the SFWA Awards .
