Crashdïet is a Swedish glam metal and sleaze rock band that was founded in Stockholm in 2000 by singer David Hellman alias Dave Lepard.

history

The band was formed in 2000 by Dave Lepard and three school friends, named after an unreleased song by Guns N 'Roses. After three demos, singer Dave Lepard separated from the other band members due to musical and personal differences and re-founded the group with the current staff in 2002, while the previous band members split up into other bands such as Repugnant or SubVision. Dave Lepard remained the defining person of the band, who was responsible for the songs, lyrics and appearance of the group. Crashdïet released an EP in 2003 with an edition of 500 copies and was signed by the record company Universal Records in 2004 , also because they were impressed by the rock'n'roll image of the band.

Bass player Peter London

Musically, the band is inspired by Skid Row , Guns N 'Roses , Kiss , WASP , Cinderella , Ratt and GG Allin . Martin Sweet and Peter London refer to the more raw works of the 1980s and see in them that later "everything was polished smooth" and "far too poppy " and "the glam and sleaze bands of the time lost punk ", and not in the rise of grunge and the band Nirvana , the reason for the death of hair metal.

In 2005 their debut album Rest in Sleaze was released, which was received by critics very benevolently and made the band one of the bearers of hope within the newly formed Sleaze movement in Sweden. However, the increasing success brought the first blow of fate for the group. Singer Dave Lepard committed suicide in January 2006 at the age of 25 due to drug problems and severe depression . The police found him in his apartment on January 20th, who found him to have committed suicide by hanging. Because of this event, the band was disbanded by the other members. Encouragement from the fans, as well as the mother of Dave Lepard, led the group to the decision to make a fresh start in 2007. Under this band name also in agreement with Lepard's family, which, however, also led to criticism, since Crashdïet was always considered Lepard's "child", it is controversial to what extent this was already dissolved at the end of 2005 and now there was no longer an original member in the band.

Former singer Simon Cruz (2010)

In Sweden, England and the USA they were looking for a new singer until they finally found Olli Herman Kosunen, the singer of the then less well-known band Reckless Love in Finland . When H. Olliver Twisted joined the band and played his first concert with Crashdïet on January 21, 2007 in Stockholm, already in front of a sold out hall with supporting acts like Crucified Barbara . In the spring, work began on the second album, for which Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars even contributed to two songs. This was finally released in November 2007 under the title The Unattractive Revolution , just in time for a tour through Europe with Hardcore Superstar . After only one and a half years, however, singer H. Olliver Twisted left the group to devote more time to his own band, Reckless Love. The other band members, however, spoke of being kicked out in the summer of 2008 due to low engagement and a lack of identification with the band.

The extensive search for a new singer dragged on until, in July 2009, Simon Cruz, at that time mainly known for his work in the band Jailbait, was introduced. In April 2010, the third studio work, Generation Wild , was released, followed by extensive tours; The band's highlights include their sold-out performances at Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood and Webster Hall in New York City. In addition, the band played in the opening act for Mötley Crüe and Ozzy Osbourne . Their third studio album, Generation Wild, sums up the "extraordinary but tragic" history of the band, according to the official biography.

Her fourth album The Savage Playground was released in January 2013. During a Saxon concert in Nottingham in April 2013, Michael Sundén, the manager of Crashdïet, suffered such serious head injuries in a fall that he died a short time later. The death of the manager also brought the band, which was currently on tour, into serious financial difficulties. In order to be able to end this tour at all, the group therefore called on their fans to donate.

The EP from 2003 was re-released in 2014 under the title Illegal Rarities . In February 2015, the band announced the departure of singer Simon Cruz during the ongoing Japan tour. With that, the group lost their third singer. In the spring Martin Sweet joined the band Sister, also from Sweden . In the same year he said that Crashdïet was not dissolved, but that his main band was still there, even though there was no active search for a new singer.

In December 2017 the band introduced Gabriel Keyes as a new singer. A few weeks later, We are the Legion, followed by the first release sung by him on the band's own label Diet Records.
