Repugnant ( French and English 'abominable') was a Swedish death metal band. The band's founder and the only permanent member of the band was Tobias Forge alias Mary Goore. Their only studio album, Epitome of Darkness , is now considered a classic of the genre, although it wasn't released until two years after the band split up.

history

Tobias Forge formed the band in 1998 when he was 17 years old. Repugnant released a demo recording in the year it was founded and the EP Hecatomb a year later . In 2000, a contract was signed with the Dutch record label Hammerheart Records , but this was dissolved again due to the unstable line-up of the band and the delayed recording of the planned debut album . Instead, the band released another demo recording on their own, which led to a contract with the Soulseller Records label, which is also based in the Netherlands. Further delays in the recording of the album then led to the breakup of the band in spring 2004 after a tour with Macabre , Epitome of Darkness was only released two years later.

The impetus for the reunification of the band was provided by the singer and bassist of the Swedish black metal band Watain , Erik Danielsson, who selected Repugnant as opening act for a concert to mark the tenth anniversary of his band in 2008. Forge had to turn down this offer due to a lack of interest or other musical obligations of his former fellow musicians.

“For the first time in years I felt this hunger again. I missed not only playing Death Metal in general, but also Repugnant's music in particular. "

- Mary Goore ( Tobias Forge )

Forge began to put together a new line-up and first asked Erik Danielsson, who, however, was too busy with his band Watain. Danielsson recommended Adam Zaars ( Enforcer , Tribulation ) instead , who in turn introduced Forge to Gottfrid Åhman (Catalyst / Invidious, In Solitude ) and Emil Svensson ( Degial ). Repugnant gave the first concert with the new line-up in June 2010 at the Armageddon Festival in London. Appearances at the Hell's Pleasure Festival in Pößneck , the Hole-in-the-Sky Festival in Bergen , and the Eindhoven Metal Meeting followed, as did appearances as the opening act for Watain in Sweden and Finland . In May 2011 Repugnant played at the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore .

After Forge had identified himself as the front man of the much more successful band Ghost , he ruled out a reunion of Repugnant in 2018.

After the dissolution of Repugnant, he played solo and in a band psychedelic and pop music in the style of the 1960s .

Pseudonyms

With the exception of Karl Envall, all members of the band appeared under pseudonyms , even if the same musicians do not do this in the service of other bands for the most part. Some of these stage names allude to well-known musicians, including Gary Moore , Carlos Santana , Roy Orbison and Tom Jones . The name Sid E. Burns, however, is an allusion to the English-as sideburns designated sideburns .
