sideburns

Sideburns (also whiskers , from French côté "side", regional contour and called favoris in the Biedermeier period ) are lateral whiskers on both halves of the face, starting at the hairline of the main hair. In the United States , sideburns are called sideburns and are believed to have been named after Ambrose Burnside , a general in the Civil War .

description

According to information from the small electrical appliance manufacturer Braun , "sideburns make the face look narrower" and " end at the height of the middle of the ear ." Gillette describes sideburns as "sideburns right in front of the ears".

Long sideburns are currently not fashionable, sideburns that are too short may not be noticed. Sideburns can be straight or wider at the bottom. Not every face shape is suitable for wearing sideburns.

combination

Sideburns are often combined with other beard styles. Kaiser Wilhelm I, for example, wore his rampant sideburns in combination with a mustache .

Sideburns go well with modern clothing and a fashionable haircut, as the sideburns then do not look flashy and exaggerated. If someone wears serious clothes or business suits, sideburns are less likely to fit. It suits men with a round face. Sideburns go well with all short haircuts. With longer hair, sideburns look "wild and unconventional". In combination with a bald head , sideburns should be kept short. The hair color should match the color of the beard, which is particularly important when dyeing hair .

history

Kaiser Wilhelm I appreciated it when high-ranking officers let the sideburns grow. The long beard sideburns were widespread in Germany in the 19th century. The shape of the sideburns follows changes in fashion. The long beard sideburns of the 19th century have now given way to (sometimes minimalist-stylized) short cuts.

In the 1960s and 1970s, sideburns were worn more and more again. One of the most famous sideburn wearers was Elvis Presley .

Sideburns are only worn sporadically these days and were more common in the past. However, the "negative image" of sideburns is now a thing of the past. Sideburns are worn rather short and pointed. Sideburns are accepted in all professional groups, long and unkempt sideburns ("long beards") could not be accepted by the employer. In the south of Germany long sideburns are worn and in the north short ones.

maintenance

After the sideburns have been cut for the first time, the small electrical appliance manufacturer Braun recommends combing the sideburns and cutting them again to the desired length. A fixed-length comb attachment available for razors can be used to cut the sideburns to the desired length. Trimming should be done before shaving as it avoids uncomfortable pulling and tearing and clogging of blades. It is important to pay attention to a symmetrical course . When wearing sideburns, short hair and a three-day beard are recommended, a mustache or long hair would be counterproductive.
