Pentacle (English ' Pentakel ') is a Dutch death metal band from Bladel that has been active since 1990.

Band history

In the winter of 1989/1990, Pentacle was founded by Mike Verhoeven (guitar), Wannes Gubbels (bass / vocals) and Marc Nelissen (drums). Two years later the first demo, Caressed by Both Sides, appeared . Together with the befriended Dutch bands Asphyx and Gorefest , the group gained their first live experience. A year later, the second demo, Winds of the Fall, was released . The group then played as support for Ancient Rites , Sentenced and Samael, among others . In 1994 the song A Dance Beyond was released on the Dutch underground sampler Paradise of the Underground (DSFA). In the same year the 7 '' Exalted Journey was released . Then a second guitarist joined Edwin Fölsche.

The EP The Fifth Moon was released in March / April 1996 via Displeased Records . The group is touring Europe as the opening act for Ancient Rites. 1997 Edwin Fölsche got out again. In 1998 the official debut album … Rides the Moonstorm was released via Damnation Records. From 1996 to 1998, Wannes Gubbels was active in the Asphyx successor band Soulburn .

In 2000 a split 10 '' with the German band Desaster, limited to 900 pieces, was released on Iron Pegasus Records . The EP Ancient Death was released afterwards. After another split release with Repugnant , drummer Marc Nelissen left the group because he no longer wanted to play live. Robert Smissart took over the drums on a tour with Disaster and has been a permanent member of the group ever since. Alex Verhoeven, the guitarist's brother, joined as the second guitarist.

In 2004 the concept album Under the Black Cross , which is about Operation Chariot in World War II , was released. The group is still active today, but has not published anything since 2004. Since Mike Verhoeven has been suffering from pain in his right arm for some time and can no longer play the guitar, the group has been paused for some time. Occasionally Pentacle performed as a trio. Wannes Gubbles is currently taking care of his doom metal band Bunkur with Martin van Drunen . In the period from 2007 to 2010 he was also a permanent bass player with Asphyx.

Music genre

Pentacle plays old-school death metal with distinct thrash metal elements. Celtic Frost and Hellhammer can be seen as clear influences . The band got further inspiration from groups like Death , Possessed , Treblinka and Slaughter .

We founded PENTACLE with the aim of keeping that old-school Death Metal that we love so much alive. That has not changed even 16 years later. You can still hear the old influences. "
