Soulburn is a Dutch metal band from Oldenzaal , which was founded in 1996, disbanded in 2000 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was originally formed in 1996 by guitarist Eric Daniels and drummer Bob Bagchus after the Asphyx group broke up . A demo was followed by the debut album Feeding on Angels , which was released in June 1998 via Century Media and on which bassist and singer Wannes Gubbels can be heard. This was followed by performances in which the group covered Asphyx songs such as Abomination Echoes , Vermin and The Sickening Dwell . Two months after the album was released, the group could be seen at Wacken Open Air . With the resurgence of Asphyx and their 2000 album On the Wings of Inferno , Soulburn broke up.

In 2013 the band got together again. 16 years after the release of the debut album, Daniel and Bagchus reported back together with the bassist and singer Twan van Geel and Remco Kreft as another guitarist with the album The Suffocating Darkness . The start-up could be traced back to Bagchus and the guitarist Rogga Johansson, who had worked on a Bathory Tribute project before they had the idea to play old Soulburn songs and finally to revive the band. Van Geel had been suggested by Gubbels, who himself could not participate as he had to look after his family. The sound carrier was recorded under the direction of Harry Wijering from Harrow Productions and mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö in Unisound Studio . In September 2014 they went on tour through Europe with Bolt Thrower and Morgoth . Incantation and Vallenfyre opened for Soulburn on this tour . 2015 was followed by a split release with Desaster , for which Soulburn contributed the song The Last Monument of God . The third album Earthless Pagan Spirit was released via Century Media in November 2016 . The song Where Splendid Corpses Are Towering Towards the Sun , which can also be heard, had already been released in advance . The album was recorded in the Netherlands at Harrow Studio and Double Noise Studio and was mixed and mastered by Devo Andersson at Endarker Studio in Sweden . In the same year, Soulburn was seen at the Eindhoven Metal Meeting, among others. In 2017, participation in the With Full Force was planned. However, the festival was canceled due to severe weather.

style

Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic assigned the group to Death Metal. In an interview with Kez Whelan from terrorizer.com , Bob Bagchus stated that he founded Soulburn with Daniels to play music in the style of Bathory. As further influences he gave Venom , Celtic Frost , Dissection and Watain . Twan van Geel is interested in occult topics, which he also incorporates into the texts. In Rock Hard , Feeding on Angels is referred to as a rabid " old-school Death Metal entry". In an interview with the magazine, Bob Bagchus stated that the band wants to "play very simple, catchy Death Metal again". The lyrics of the album are mainly from Wannes Gubbels and are typically satanic for Death Metal . in a later edition, Sebastian Schilling described The Suffocating Darkness as "90s mid-tempo black metal backflash". Especially van Geels singing reminds of the Black Metal of the 1990s. In an interview with Schilling, Bagchus stated that despite influences like old Bathory, Hellhammer , Celtic Frost and Venom, Soulburn is not a pure black metal band. In another issue, Patrick Schmidt assigned the group to Death Doom. In an interview with him, Eric Daniels stated that the band is mainly influenced by Death, Doom, Black and Dark Metal . On Earthless Pagan Spirit they tried to bring in a stronger Doom Metal part and to make the songs longer and to create a dark and ominous atmosphere. In his review of Feeding on Angels , Frank Albrecht from Rock Hard stated that there is hardly any difference to Asphyx and that the vocals are similar to that of the previous group. He summarized the style as classic Death Metal with slight influences from Doom Metal and simple drumming, so that it can be described as a mixture of the Asphyx albums The Rack and God Cries . Sebastian Schilling described the music of The Suffocating Darkness as "Bathory-heavy 90s Black Metal", which mostly moves in the medium speed range and which has an icy sound. In a later edition he described Earthless Pagan Spirit as "frosty mid-tempo black metal in the style of the nineties". The drums are quick, but not too fast, the singing consists of barking, which conveys neither Weltschmerz nor outrage, but hatred. However, the songs are too uniform and there are no distinctive moments.
