history

1988–1990: foundation, early phase and band dissolution

Desaster was founded in 1988 by the guitarist Markus “Infernal” Kuschke and the singer and bassist “Creator Cassie” in Koblenz . The aim was to musically create a symbiosis of Black , Death and Thrash Metal of the late 80s. The two musicians were influenced by bands such as Venom , Hellhammer , Kreator , Sodom and Destruction . The band name is derived from Destruction's song Total Desaster .

Together with drummer Alexander Arz, several demos were recorded until 1990 , but they were never released because the band was dissatisfied with their performance or their music and did not assume that their music would arouse interest from fans or labels. The first appearance took place in 1989 in Mülheim-Kärlich. A year later, disaster was resolved due to various problems, including a. the difficulty of finding a permanent drummer again.

1992–1995: re-formation and first appearances

Although the band had split up, Infernal did not want to give up, wrote new songs between 1990 and 1992 and looked for new musicians for a re-establishment of Desaster. The first new line-up was formed in early 1992 and consisted of Infernal and the drummer “Luggi” and the singer “Okkulto”, who also took over the bass. The first appearance in this line-up took place in July 1992 in the restaurant of Luggi's parents, Zur Linde in Koblenz-Lay , without their knowledge. That evening the band got to know the bass player Volker "Odin" Moritz, who then joined Disaster and completed the band.

The first demo , entitled The Fog of Avalon , was recorded in the band's rehearsal room and released in 1993. The second demo, Lost in the Ages , was published in 1994 and was well received by the domestic and foreign trade press. Due to a lack of engagement, drummer Luggi was kicked out of the band after the release of Lost in the Ages . The mini-tour through the Netherlands , together with the band Occult , was completed in April 1995 with Stefan "Tormentor" Hüskens as session drummer.

1995–1999: Record deal, first studio albums and growing popularity

In the meantime, the bands had received numerous offers from record labels and finally decided on Merciless Records . The first release on the label was the split single Desaster / Ungod together with the German black metal band Ungod in October 1995. Due to misunderstandings, this cooperation between the two bands almost never came about, which made Disaster much more popular let. Tobias "Thorim" Moelich took over the drums for this single , but he did not want to join Desaster permanently, but only wanted to record the upcoming debut album, A Touch of Medieval Darkness . The album was released in April 1996.

Meanwhile, the music of Disasters showed significantly more Black Metal influences, especially from bands of the "second wave" such as Samael , Darkthrone , Immortal and Mayhem . This style was consolidated on the EP Stormbringer , released in 1997 . Since Thorim had left Disaster after A Touch of Medieval Darkness as announced , Tormentor had joined the band as a permanent drummer. The EP Stormbringer is the first release of Disaster with Tormentor's contribution.

Next, a split release was planned with the band Scepter, but they had no songs left for a split CD. Disaster released the single Ride on for Revenge in 1998 . Hellfire's Dominion , the second studio album, was released in September 1998. Like the single and the previous EP, the style of music on Hellfire's Dominion is heavily influenced by Black Metal.

On the occasion of the band's tenth anniversary, Desaster put together a compilation with numerous previously unpublished songs and photos and published them in 1999 under the name Ten Years of Total Disaster . This was released at a concert at the same location where Disaster's first appearance in 1989 took place.

1999–2001: International concerts and third studio album

From 1999 onwards, Disaster became increasingly active live at home and abroad. So they completed several concerts in Germany, Belgium , Switzerland and Italy and played at the reunification of Destruction in their opening program at Hellraiser in Engelsdorf .

In 2000 the split EP Desaster appeared in League with Pentacle together with the band Pentacle . Further appearances and tours followed, including in Hungary , before the band recorded the third studio album Tyrants of the Netherworld in late 2000 and released it on November 11, 2000 via Iron Pegasus Records . In the time after that, Disaster u. a. the first time in the Czech Republic and played their 99th concert in August 2001 at the Wacken Open Air .

2001–2005: New singer and intensive touring

After the Wacken appearance, Okkulto left Desaster for personal reasons. His successor was Guido "Sataniac" Wissmann, whom the band met when they performed together in 2000 in Koblenz. Since Sataniac's band Divine Genocide had practically disbanded, he became the new singer Disasters after a joint rehearsal in August 2001. The single Souls of Infernity , which was released in the fall of 2001, is the last release on which Okkulto can be heard.

After the Seven Spells of Death tour (2001), the fourth studio album, Divine Blasphemies , was released in 2002 , in which Sataniac can be heard for the first time as the new singer and a release of Desaster. The longest tour of Desaster to date was the Triple Thrash Tour , which led across Europe and served to promote the recently released album. At a concert as part of the tour in Serbia, the live album Live in Serbian Hell was recorded and released in 2003. Also in 2003, Desaster's third major tour, the Black Crusaders invading Europe , took place with Zemial , Dark Fortress and Odem Arcarum .

In August 2003, Desaster performed for the first time at Party.San and released the DVD Live at Party.San Open Air from this performance in 2004 . Her performance in São Paulo in October 2003 was also recorded and released as a live album under the name Brazilian Blitzkrieg Blasphemies in July 2004. In 2004, Disaster was also very active live. There were performances at the Rock Hard Festival , the Headbangers Open Air , the Summer Breeze and in numerous European countries, including England , Finland , Ireland , Sweden , the Netherlands and Switzerland .
