Occult was a Dutch Black - thrash metal band with death metal -Einflüssen from Geldrop . In 2005 they changed their name to Legion of the Damned .

Band history

In 1990 the group was founded around Maurice "Sephiroth" Swinkels (vocals), the drummer of the band Bestial Summoning , Leon Pennings (guitar), Sjors Tuithof (bass) and Erik Fleuren (drums). Before the start of the actual thrash metal revival, the group used a fusion of black and thrash metal, which was to become characteristic of parts of the Norwegian-Swedish black metal scene in the late 1990s. The first songs were written in 1992 and live performances followed. After a performance at the Black Flame Festival in Esloo , where the group covered , among others, Acheron , Sathanas and Samael , a promo cassette with the material of the performance was released. With their second demo Occult got a contract with the Dutch independent label Foundation 2000 .

In 1994 the debut album Prepare to Meet Thy Doom was released , which was reminiscent of the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s. The second guitarist Richard Ebisch can be heard for the first time on the album. Then a singer joined Rachel Heyzer-Kloosterwaard. She supported the high-pitched screeching vocals of Swinkels around Growling . In the same year Occult opened on one of the first black metal tours through Europe for Marduk and Immortal . Further appearances with Cradle of Filth , Ancient Rites and Desaster followed.

The Enemy Within was released in 1995 , produced by Harris Johns in the Berlin Music Labs studio. The music was now much more oriented towards Death Metal . In 1997 they played at the Dynamo Open Air . In 1998 Occult decided to leave their record deal. A promo CD brought the group a new contract with Massacre Records . Of Flesh and Blood was released in 1999. Shortly thereafter, two founding members left. Twan Fleuren came for Sjors Tuithof and Leon Pennings left the group. From then on Richard Ebisch dominated the songwriting and led the group more towards Thrash Metal. In late 1999 the group played on a Christmas tour with Morbid Angel , Gorgoroth , Amon Amarth and Krisiun .

In 2000 the group lost their contract and was again able to sign a promo CD with Painkiller Records. There the album Rage to Revenge was released in 2001 . It was to be the last album with Rachel Heyzer-Kloosterwaard, who became a singer with Sinister shortly after the release and therefore had to leave the group.

Occult then went on in a four-man line-up and released the last album Elegy for the Weak in 2003 . After an X-Mas tour with Kataklysm , Onslaught , Exodus , Unleashed and Behemoth , Occult decided to change her name to Legion of the Damned.
