Location and economy

Geldrop is 5 kilometers east of Eindhoven on the A67 Antwerp  - Eindhoven - Venlo motorway . It has a train station on the Eindhoven - Weert railway. Four kilometers to the northeast, between Eindhoven and Helmond , is Mierlo.

Both villages can be described as suburbs of Eindhoven. There is still some industry in Geldrop. The company Kuhn Landmaschinen (formerly PZ Zweegers ) operates a plant with approx. 330 employees for agricultural machines. Honey cake: Peijnenburg company, known nationwide; also a factory that produces auto parts and a lot of small businesses. The time when Geldrop was known for agriculture and cherry tree cultivation is almost over.

history

Geldrop is known for the first time around 1600. When in 1629 the general Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien-Nassau took the city of Herzogenbusch for the Protestant Republic of the United Netherlands , many Catholics had to flee. The bishop Ophovius, an acquaintance of the Antwerp diplomat and painter Peter Paul Rubens , moved to Geldrop Castle. Rubens is said to have visited him there and perhaps painted; a portrait of the bishop by Rubens hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam .

In the 19th century Geldrop temporarily became a factory town thanks to the wool and textile industry , which however died out after around 1960. During the Second World War there was heavy fighting here as part of Operation Market Garden (September / October 1944).

Attractions

  • The castle in the middle of Geldrop: The building, which was built in 1616, contains a small local history museum, a restaurant, a party center and a hall where the residents of Geldrop and the surrounding area can have weddings. Other parts of the castle are office spaces that are not open to the public. The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens and parks.
  • The small Geldrop weaving museum , in an old textile factory, with an important collection of looms . Open only to a limited extent.
  • The small puppet theater museum, also in the middle of Geldrop.
