places

The municipality includes the villages of Cuijk, Haps, St. Agatha, Beers, the village of Linden, a small village called Katwijk and a settlement called Vianen (west of the A73). About 16,000 people live in Cuijk itself.

Location and economy

The municipality is located in the northeast of the province on the Meuse , which swings there from the south in a westerly direction. It borders on Grave . The Nijmegen - Venlo railway and the A73 Nijmegen – Venray –Venlo motorway run through Cuijk . Cuijk has had a small industrial port on the Meuse since the 1950s. Many, mostly small industrial and trading companies have since settled in Cuijk, including a potato processing company that belongs to the Aviko group.

Story haps

The name Haps is said to come from a Celtic , perhaps also pre-Germanic, word apa or appa ( water ). After excavations it was found that the place was built around 700 BC. Chr. Was inhabited. A castle stood here from the 13th century to around 1800. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Haps was a more or less autonomous area, but always dependent on Geldern and Brabant . It came to the Duchy of Geldern in 1417 . The village of St. Agatha , which belongs to Haps, was built around the monastery of the Knights of the Cross , which was built in 1371 (and still exists) . Haps fell to the municipality of Cuijk in the late 20th century.

History of Cuijk

The name Cuijk is said to come from a Germanic or Celtic word keukja ( curve ). The Romans built a fort here in the middle of the first century, around which a civil vicus was formed, from which the settlement of Ceuclum arose. The Romans stayed in Ceuclum in the first half of the fifth century. After the Great Migration , only a few people, Franconians , lived in Cuijk.

In the 11th century knights from Teisterbant came to Cuijk. These lords of Cuijk also settled in Grave, where they had a castle built. The most famous of these knights, Jan or Johann (1265–1308), took part in the battle of Worringen in 1288 and the revenge expedition in Flanders two years after the Spurs Battle of 1302, ie 1304, on the part of Brabant . In his will he decreed that poor farmers were allowed to cultivate and cultivate part of his unused areas without rent.

The Land van Cuijk was between about 1400 and 1550 a kind of buffer between the warring duchies funds and Brabant, who finally fell Brabant.

In the Eighty Years War , Cuijk was a no man's land from around 1602 to 1648. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 it fell to the Republic of the Netherlands. Until 1800 the Catholics had to go to the neighboring village of Oeffelt, which was then abroad ( Duchy of Kleve ), to attend mass. In 1712 all of Cuijk was destroyed by fire.

At Cuijk, part of the Meuse was deliberately not diked. This area was with Beers and was called Beerse Overlaat . When the tide was high, this land was flooded to keep more densely populated areas dry. It was not until 1922 and 1942 that better waterworks put an end to this often fatal situation for Cuijk's agriculture.

The 19th century also brought progress to Cuijk: Cuijk developed into a small market town and was connected to the railway in 1883. However, the great growth only began with the emergence of the new industrial area after 1950.

Missionaries founded an America Museum in Cuijk in 1973, an ethnographic museum that dealt only with the original inhabitants of America , the Indians . It was closed in 2006 due to austerity measures by the municipality and the Ministry of Culture.

Roman period coin treasure

A well-preserved Roman coin treasure was recovered in 2006 during excavations in a Roman settlement in a 20 cm high clay jar that was covered with a shard and deliberately buried in a pit. There were over 200 coins, a bracelet and a finger ring in the vessel.

Sights and events

In Cuijk, whose center looks more like a small town than a village, there is a tower from the 15th century. Inside this tower there is an archaeological museum, the collection of which consists mainly of finds from Roman times .

The St. Martin's Church, named after Martin von Tours , was not completed until 1911. Inside there is a baroque organ from the end of the 17th century, which has been removed from another church several times and is played at public concerts (along with an altarpiece carved from wood, copied from an old model ) .

In the village of Linden there is a church built around 1500. There is also a lake for water sports near the Meuse. The late Gothic monastery church of the Knights of the Cross is located in the district of Sint Agatha .

On the Maas (water sports, marina) and in the wooded surroundings, many opportunities for relaxation and entertainment have been created for tourists.

The Vrije Markt in Cuijk was a huge covered flea market and every Saturday attracted thousands of visitors from near and far. Around 1,500 stands were set up in huge port halls (22,000 m²). Vrije Markt Cuijk burned down in May 2016. The market hall reopened in October 2017 with a smaller sales area than before.

Every year the Stichting Rolstoeldansen Nederland (Foundation for Wheelchair Dancing Netherlands) (SRN) organizes the Holland Dans Spectacle ( wheelchair dance ) in Cuijk .
