The approximate number of inhabitants (as of 2018) in brackets.

  • Beast Houtakker (950)
  • Diessen (3695)
  • Esbeek (1235)
  • Haghorst (835)
  • Hilvarenbeek (8640), seat of the municipal administration

Location and economy

Hilvarenbeek is located south-southeast of the neighboring town of Tilburg , the distance between the two town centers is about 9 km. The nearest train station and the nearest motorway connection are also in Tilburg (A58, Breda - Tilburg - 's-Hertogenbosch , exit no. 10). Diessen is located immediately east of Hilvarenbeek.

The main sources of income for the municipality are tourism and agriculture. Hilvarenbeek, where many people live who have their work in Tilburg, now has more of the character of a suburb of Tilburg than of a former farming village.

history

The name Beek first appeared in the 12th century. In the 14th century the name of St. Hildevardi was added. In the 15th century the village grew because it was on an important trade route. However, due to the Eighty Years' War , the village became mainly a farming village until the 20th century.

On January 1, 1997, the municipality of Diessen was incorporated into the municipality of Hilvarenbeek. This restored the administrative unity of these two places after 350 years. Diessen's Christians were forced to attend the Reformed Church instead of the Roman Catholic Church between 1648 and 1800 : the village church was only accessible to Protestants.

Hilvarenbeek was the first parish in the Netherlands where the oak processionary moth was found.

In 1964 the Hilvaria studios were built in the woods south of Hilvarenbeek . Initially they were used for film recordings, also for commercials and short television films. Between 1974 and 1981, the buildings were used as recording studios for pop music . The equipment was so modern at the time (the Eindhoven-based Philips works, which also made records , were not far away!) That not only top Dutch artists such as Golden Earring and Herman Brood recorded several titles there, but also foreign ones such as Black Sabbath , Cat Stevens and Genesis . The two Genesis albums Wind & Wuthering (1976) and And Then There Were Three (1978) were recorded at Hilvarenbeeker Relight Studios. The complex now houses a conference center.

Attractions

  • Between Tilburg and Hilvarenbeek there is the Beekse Bergen Safari Park, which is also known outside of the Netherlands . There is also a holiday park with a swimming pool, holiday homes and other things. The safari park participates in the breeding program for the conservation of the Siberian tiger .
  • The center of Hilvarenbeek around the village square Vrijthof is well worth seeing. There is, among other things, the St. Peter's Church, built around 1300. In this church there is a sermon chair from 1628, an organ that is often used for organ concerts in summer, and other baroque-style furniture . The tower of this church, which dates from 1450, has a carillon and can be climbed from time to time in summer.
  • In Hilvarenbeek there are a few small, limited open museums that give an insight into village life in past centuries: a small beer brewery, a country doctor's practice and a small lemonade and liqueur factory.
  • The southwest half of the municipality, from Tilburg to the Belgian border, consists largely of forests, where hikes marked by the local VVV (tourist office) are possible.
  • The well-known Abbey of Postel , just across the Belgian border, is a popular destination for such hikes and bike tours.
  • The Hilvaria Studios building is open to the public every Sunday. There are paintings and other works by local artists on display, and you can have coffee there, for example.
  • As everywhere in this area, the carnival is the biggest event of the year.
  • Diessen also has a medieval church dedicated to St. Willibrordus .
  • Once a year in summer the hardstyle and hardcore outdoor festival "Decibel" takes place.
