The village of Sint Anthonis has fewer than 5000 inhabitants. It is mainly located around the central village square, which is also called " Brink " and which gave the place the nickname Brinkdorf .

history

Sint Anthonis has officially been a parish since 1477. Until 1794 it belonged to the independent Free Glory Boxmeer . The patron and namesake of the village is Saint Anthony the Great.

The community was originally called Oploo, Sint Anthonis en Ledeacker . In 1913 it had less than 2000 inhabitants. On January 1, 1994 there was a change of border and name. The municipality of Oploo, St. Anthonis en Ledeacker was merged with the municipality of Wanroij to form a new municipality, which was initially given the name St. Anthonis , which was shortly thereafter changed to Sint Anthonis.

Oelbroeck

The original name of the village of Sint Anthonis was Oelbroec , initially without an ending-k. The name was first mentioned in documents around 1312. After 1500 the name Oelbroeck is hardly mentioned anymore. At first it was still called Sint Anthonis in Oelbroeck, but from 1590 the name was no longer mentioned in administrative terms. In the ecclesiastical area, however, the name remained at least until the 19th century. The name is still used today, for example for sports clubs.

politics

The Christian Democrats of the CDA won the last local elections in March 2018, more than two-fifths of all votes. In the 2018–2022 legislative period, there is a coalition of the local Sint Anthonis Nu party and the VVD .
