Goirle ( listen ^{? / I} , with stretch-i ) is a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Noord-Brabant . Their total area is 43.38 km². Goirle has 23,782 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019).

Places; Surname

The municipality includes the village of Goirle, where the municipal administration is located, and the neighboring villages of Riel and Nieuwkerk. Riel was an independent municipality until 1997.

The name Goirle is derived from "goor" (= boggy, damp land). The river Leij flows through the municipality.

Location, history, economy

Goirle is located immediately south of Tilburg and has developed into a suburb of this city over the last few decades . The southern section of the city motorway around Tilburg has an exit to Goirle.

Goirle was a farming village until around 1850; but then textile factories settled here that processed wool . When these came in because of the fierce competition from the Far East, they gave way to many smaller businesses. When Tilburg began to develop into a medium-sized city, Goirle also grew through the settlement of commuters . An incorporation by Tilburg was prevented several times by successful protests by the citizens of Goirle.

Attractions

• The Nieuwkerk forest (125 hectares), which was planted in 1930–1936 as a job creation project.
• The De Regte Heide nature reserve (250 hectares), where there are some burial mounds from the Bronze Age .
• The village churches of Goirle and Riel both have remarkable medieval steeples.
• Memorial to a Wehrmacht soldier who lost his life while rescuing two Dutch children from Allied fighter pilots.

The Lijst Riel Goirle could defend its election victory in 2018 from the year 2014 with 22 percent of the vote in the local elections. Between 2018 and 2022 they form a coalition with the CDA , Pro Actief Goirle and the VVD .
