Paul van den Hout (* 1963 in Goirle , Netherlands ) is a Dutch sculptor , painter and installation artist .

Life

Paul van den Hout studied from 1983 to 1988 at the Koninklijke Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in 's-Hertogenbosch (today Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving St. Joost in Breda and' s-Hertogenbosch). In 1992 and 1999 he was supported by the artist project Werkbeurs of the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst (Fonds BKVB) in Amsterdam . In 1996 he was on a study visit to the International Center for Cultural Development (ICCD) in Trivandrum , India . In 1996 and 2000 he took part in the funded Project Subsidie of the Center Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam (CBK) in Rotterdam . In 1995, 2001 and 2005 he received a grant from the BKVB Fund.

His artistic work consists primarily of sculptures and sculptures with often flowing transitions to one another, as well as installations . Further forms of artistic expression by Paul van den Hout are drawing , painting and photography as well as printing and poster art . Another means of artistic expression are musical instruments that he uses as parts of sculptures or installations or that he sometimes uses in his own performances . He finds his motifs and artistic references primarily in popular culture , ranging from comics and computer game iconography to pop music and underground music . He revises and uses these motifs in an often "funny or thoughtful game with images and ideas".

His sculptures and installations are often bizarre-looking figures, which he called "soul searchers" (German for meaning ) and "fortune seekers" (German soldiers of fortune ), respectively. Van den Hout uses various materials such as plastics , textiles , wood , metal and paint , from which he creates life-size, humanized forms. Many of his works, such as the "Pilgrims" (German pilgrims ), stand on realistically shaped human feet.

He has also been involved in internet art since 2000 and, in addition to his homepage, now operates three different websites, each in English, as art projects. His third internet art project , which he started in October 2011 and in which he presents current “great” contemporary art and artists in the form of a blog , is the poster project paper cut, alluding to the German term “ paper cut ” .

Van den Hout's works have been shown at numerous art exhibitions in several countries in Europe, Asia and North America.

Paul van den Hout lives and works in Rotterdam.
