Career

Michael de Leeuw started playing soccer at RKTVV Tilburg. For the 2007/08 season he then moved to the youth department of the Dutch first division club Willem II Tilburg .

Two years later he moved to the first team of the second division club SC Veendam . There he was able to establish himself as a regular player when he scored 25 goals in 36 games in his first season and was the top scorer. He was also awarded the title "Talent of the Year". Several Eredivisie clubs wanted to sign the talent, but de Leeuw decided to stay with Veendam.

A year later he moved to De Graafschap . There he played his first year in the Eredivisie. At the end of the season, however, the team reached 17th place in the table. In the relegation, the club had to admit defeat to FC Den Bosch after a 0-0 away game and a 1-1 draw at their own stadium . Due to relegation, he left the club and joined FC Groningen for the 2012/13 season .

He missed the first matchday with Groningen due to a yellow card suspension from the previous year. He made his debut for the second team of Groningen on this match day when he scored his first goal in the 2-0 win against Volendam II. He then played for the first team for the rest of the season. On September 30, 2012, he scored his first hat trick in a 3-2 win against Roda Kerkrade . In the 2014/15 season he won the KNVB Cup with Groningen when PEC Zwolle was defeated 2-0 in the final. In the 2015/16 season he was temporarily captain of the team.

On May 17, 2016, Chicago Fire announced that they would sign de Leeuw. He received a contract with a term of three years until 2018. The association has an option to extend this for one year. He made his debut for Chicago on July 10, 2016 against Toronto FC . On October 1, 2017, he tore a cruciate ligament in the game against New York City FC . In the 2018 season he only played nine times for Chicago, the team also failed to reach the play-offs.

In January 2019, de Leeuw returned to the Netherlands and moved to the second half of the 2018/19 season of the Eredivisie on a free transfer to newly promoted FC Emmen .
