Several Eredivisie clubs wanted to sign the talent, but de Leeuw decided to stay with Veendam.
A year later he moved to De Graafschap . There he played his first year in the Eredivisie. At the end of the season, however, the team reached 17th place in the table. Due to relegation, he left the club and joined FC Groningen for the 2012/13 season .

On September 30, 2012, he scored his first hat trick in a 3-2 win against Roda Kerkrade . In the 2014/15 season he won the KNVB Cup with Groningen when PEC Zwolle was defeated 2-0 in the final.
