Ungod is a German extreme metal band.

history

The band was formed in the winter of 1991. In 1992 she made the demo recording Magicus Tallis Damnatio . After the recordings, drummer Condemptor left Ungod. The Unsane from the Dutch band Bestial Summoning published a review of this release in its fanzine and asked the band, after exchanging letters and tapes , if they wanted to release an album through their new record company HSB Records. This accepted his offer and recorded eight songs for her debut album Circle of the Seven Infernal Pacts with guest drummer The Unknown in June / July 1993 ; the album was released on LP at the end of 1993 with an edition of 500 copies and was sold out after a short time. Due to the financial problems of HSB Records, the German record company Merciless Records took over the release of the CD version.

After the release, the band often had casting problems. In 1995 she released split EPs with Desaster and Cabal through Merciless Records. After taking on new members, she recorded the EP Conquering What Once Was Ours , which was released in autumn 1995 on the Belgian record company Wood Nymph Records and achieved cult status in the black metal underground. In 1998 the band released a split EP with Sadistic Intent via Merciless Records and broke up for personal reasons.

In 2002 the demo recordings of Ungod and Baxaxaxa, a side project by Ungod, Altar and Cabal members, were re-released on the split EP Magicus Talli Damnatio / Hellfire .

In 2008 the band announced the re-release of the EP Conquering What Once Was Ours on vinyl and CD, new T-shirts and their return in June / July 2008, at the end of 2008 Conquering What Once Was Ours was released via Kneel Before the Master's Throne Records with bonus tracks and new design by Chris "Thorncross" Moyen republished. In April 2009 the EP Ungod followed . In July 2009, Cryptic Tormentor joined Ungod as a second guitarist. In July / August 2009 a split EP with Mort was also released. In 2009 singer Infamist of Tumulus was kicked out of the band and replaced by Infernal Molester. Since then another EP, an album and two split EPs have been released.

style

Ungod's influences initially included black metal pioneers such as Venom , Bathory , Sodom , Sarcófago and Destruction, as well as contemporary underground bands such as Samael , Necromantia and Rotting Christ . The band wanted to bring back the spirit of old metal that had been lost due to "stupid trends and crossover mentality". Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard counts Ungod “among the roughest, most uncompromising black metal bands, but [they] were not musical chaos. Under the raw violence of the songs lie a few good ideas that the trained underground ear will quickly discover. "

On the EP Conquering What Once Was Ours the music contained more heavy metal passages and was based more on medium tempo.

While the music on the debut album Circle of the Seven Infernal Pacts was referred to as "Black Apocalyptic Metal", it now uses the self-label "Ancient Extreme Metal " or "Old School Extreme Metal". Since the members are not satanists , the band has no seriously satanic, but rather blasphemous and morbid lyrics.

Their EP În numele Metalului Est-European is a tribute to the old Eastern European metal scene , from which Törr and Kat are also named as Ungod's influences. Although the band does not refer to the Norwegian scene and does not name any of these bands as an influence, but also a variety of bands and styles of music unrelated to black metal, Dorian Gorr wrote in his review of Cloaked in Eternal Darkness in Rock Hard that he treats them "Black Metal conservative than the Pope to Catholicism . Unpolished hardness in the style of early Darkthrone is what the eavesdropper will get. Just don't act too unusually produced, just don't deviate from tried and tested subject complexes. What has worked well in Norway for 20 years cannot be bad in this country. "
