Kaamos was a Swedish death metal band from Stockholm that was formed in 1998 and broke up in 2006.

history

The band was formed in 1998. After a few rehearsals, the band released their first demo the following year. Two songs from this demo were also released as an EP on Dauthus Records . Dauthus, who released the EP, also designed the band's publications and website and was considered a fifth member by them. In the same year bassist and singer Johan Thörngren left the band and was replaced by Karl Envall. In 2000 drummer Thomas Åberg left the band and was replaced by Christofer "Chris Piss" Barkensjö. After the band had written more new songs, the demo Curse of Aeons was recorded at SubSonic Studio and released in early 2001. Through the demo, the band received many contract offers from various labels, with the group ultimately choosing Candlelight Records . In November 2001, the band returned to the SubSonic studio to record their debut album. With producer Messiah Marcolin (ex- Candlemass ) the nine songs were recorded within ten days and released as a self-titled album in May 2002. The band received little feedback on this release. During the remainder of the year, as well as in 2003, they performed live across Europe (including a tour with Watain ) while they worked on new pieces. In March 2004 the band went to the Berno Studio to record their next album, Lucifer Rising , which was released in February 2005 on Candlelight Records. In addition, a split release with the band Repugnant appeared in 2004 , in which Karl Envall and Chris Piss were also active. While the band continued to play concerts and work on new material for a third album, guitarist Nicklas Eriksson left the band. The band then announced that they would split up and play their last appearance at Party.San 2006. The material that had been written by then was released as an EP the following year under the name Scales of Leviathan . In 2008 an attempt was made to revive the band, but this failed after a few rehearsals due to a lack of motivation and internal disputes.

Music style and lyrics

Karl Envall named Autopsy a great influence on Kaamos and "any old school death metal band"; Konstantin Papavassilou also confirmed autopsy as one of the main influences of the band and also named Morbid Angel . By their own account, their style came about "naturally" while other bands were founded for fun or tried to create an "old-school" sound. Drummer Chris Piss named Dave Lombardo as an influence. Luxi Lahtinen from the webzine Metal Rules sees parallels in Lucifer Rising with the style of Demigods Slumber ; the album sounds so "old school" that it takes the listener back in time to bands like Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Incubus and Grotesque . The music was written by all the members, Papavassilou wrote all the lyrics and considers them to be as important as the music. He sees it as very important that death metal lyrics should be about death, darkness and a "morbid heart of humanity", about dark aspects. His texts are "either ideas or philosophies - or general patterns in occultism , and especially the left-hand path ". The texts deal exclusively with this path. He thinks it is clear that Kaamos is a satanic band or at least belongs to the satanic death metal sphere. The band's name, translated by the band as 'darkness', is the Finnish name for the polar night and is described by Papavassilou as "[z] iemlich appropriate when referring to mythology ". The cover of Lucifer Rising is based on the devil of the tarot and, together with the booklet, symbolizes everything that is expressed in the texts.
