Missal Aboense

The Missale Aboense ("Missal of Turku ") was the first book printed for Finland . It is the only incunable , i.e. the only book of Finnish literature printed before 1501.

The missal was printed on the order of the Bishop of Turku , Konrad Bitz , in the printing works of Bartholomäus Ghotan in Lübeck in 1488 for use in the diocese . The preface written by Bitz is dated August 17, 1488. The book is printed in Latin on parchment and paper . It comprises 550 pages, the circulation was a few hundred.

The Missale Aboense was, according to its name, a missal that contained both general Mass texts ( Ordinarium Missae and Proprium Missae ) as well as texts for the mass celebrations of all saints of the church year . The missal used the Dominican measuring scheme, since the Dominican liturgy was determined to be the liturgy of the diocese of Turku around 1330. At that time, the diocese did not have the means to have its own missal printed. Printing was saved by printing missiles based on the Dominican liturgy for use in other Nordic countries.

However, the book also contained some changes and additions made for Finland, among others in connection with the patron saint of the diocese, Heinrich von Uppsala and other saints.

Not a single copy of the missal is completely preserved, but fifteen incomplete copies are known. Four of them are printed on parchment, the others on paper. Two of the parchment editions are in Finland (Helsinki and Jyväskylä) and one each in the royal library in Denmark and in Stockholm. The entire work could be reconstructed from the preserved pages; Reprints based on this were published in 1971 and 1988.
