The city of Bochum is divided into six districts , which in turn are divided into statistical districts based on the municipal code for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2016, a total of 371,097 inhabitants lived in Bochum in an area of 145.7 km².

The current urban structure goes back in part to historical farmers who belonged to the Bochum office in the Middle Ages . Later, some of today's districts were independent communities in the Bochum district (1817-1929) and were gradually incorporated until the district was completely dissolved.

The table shows the city districts and their subdivision into statistical districts. In everyday life, the traditional parts of the city or district are often still used; but these have no official character. The statistical districts, however, are based on the traditional districts and are therefore often similar. In the table, districts that do not exist as a statistical district are given in brackets after the corresponding statistical district.
