The U35 CampusLinie of Stadtbahn Bochum connects the cities of Bochum and Herne and has 22 stations. It begins in the Herne district of Baukau at Strünkede Castle , has stops in the city center of Herne and at the local train station , leads through the Bochum district of Riemke , crosses under Bochum's main train station and runs above ground through Querenburg via the Ruhr University to the Hustadt terminus . With around 85,000 passengers a day, it is the most frequently used line on Bochum's Stadtbahn. It is operated by the Bogestra .

course

The trains run in the middle of Universitätsstrasse

The U35 starts in the Baukau district of Herne at Strünkede Castle. It passes under the Herne train station and (between the stops Berninghausstraße and Rensingstraße) crosses the Herne / Bochum city limits underground. Significant underground stations in Bochum's urban area are the German Mining Museum , Bochum Town Hall (north) and Bochum Central Station . The last underground station in the direction of Hustadt is Waldring , from the Wasserstraße station it runs above ground in the middle of Universitätsstraße to the Hustadt terminus . All above-ground stops in this area have been upgraded to include light rail vehicles. The above-ground route runs entirely on its own track body and only has crossings at the same level between the Wasserstraße and Brenscheder Straße stops . However, it has a priority circuit at these three intersections. This means that the U35 is almost like a full subway .

The workshop is located at Hofsteder Straße 252 in Riemke on the former site of shaft 2 of the United Constantin der Große colliery .

history

The first section of the U35 from Herne Schloß Strünkede to Bochum Hauptbahnhof was opened on September 2, 1989. In November 1993 the section Bochum Hauptbahnhof - Hustadt was put into operation. For this purpose, the old stations were completely rebuilt, as the concrete architecture from the 1970s was now seen as too bulky and out of date. The Klinikum stop was abandoned when switching to light rail operations because the planned university clinic was not implemented.

U35 CampusLine at the Ruhr-Universität stop

Before the U35 opened, tram line 305 ran between Herne Bahnhof and Hustadt in Querenburg. Between 1989 and 1993 the 306 ran from Wanne-Eickel Hauptbahnhof to Hustadt on a temporary basis . Both lines (30) 5 and 306 were reinforced by buses during the lecture periods at the Ruhr University, as the 20-meter-long vehicles at the time could not handle the traffic between the main station and the university despite five-minute intervals. It was only since the line was switched to the 28-meter-long B-cars in 1993 , which also operated at least partially in double traction, that the Bogestra was able to do without these amplifier buses.

In order to guarantee a pure double traction operation, six Tango railcars were purchased between 2007 and 2008 .

At the request of the Bochums and Hernes city councils, the U35 line received the addition of the Campus Line on June 12, 2011 . In place of the old clinic stop , the new health campus station was opened on November 18, 2017 , which better connects the planned biomedical park and the health campus NRW to local public transport.

planning

Behind the Hustadt terminus there is a bridge that swings over the road to the right and was built as an advance payment for the extension of the former tram route to Witten. Instead of the originally planned extension to Witten, the U35 should, according to the latest plans, run to the University of Applied Sciences in Querenburg in the future. Should this project be implemented, an extension to Witten is almost impossible according to the old city railway plans without splitting into two lines. An extension to the Kemnader See would also be conceivable. However, within the framework of the IGVP it was assessed with an insufficient cost-benefit coefficient.

A further extension from Herne to Recklinghausen (the tram line from Herne to Recklinghausen that existed before the U35 until October 3, 1982 is a model for this) is also being planned, but was also assessed according to IGVP with an inadequate cost-benefit coefficient. Both projects are therefore classified as level 2 projects within the framework of the rail requirements plan; realization is therefore unrealistic.

The 25 vehicles of the type B80D, which are mainly used, are to be technically overhauled by Stadler-Rail, as the procurement of spare parts can no longer be planned for the current technical equipment. Associated with this is the acquisition of six new vehicles of the "Tango" type from the manufacturer Stadler, which are not technically compatible with the SIBAS16 of the current B80D, but with the revised version. Mixed double traction would therefore be possible. For the six existing Tango lifts, the originally specified electrical coupling to the B80D vehicles was reduced to a purely mechanical coupling.
