Jean-Louis Koszul
Jean-Louis Koszul (born January 3, 1921 in Strasbourg ; † January 12, 2018 ) was a French mathematician who studied algebra and differential geometry.
Life
Koszul went to school in Strasbourg, where his father André Koszul was a professor at the university, and began his studies there, which he continued in Paris. In 1949 he became Maître des Conférences at the University of Strasbourg and in 1956 professor. Since 1963 he was a professor at the University of Grenoble . He was a member of Bourbaki since the late 1940s .
Koszul wrote about the topology of Lie groups as early as 1947 and published his work Homologie et cohomologie des algèbres de Lie in 1950 . In connection with studies of the cohomology of Lie algebras, he also introduced the Koszul complex into homological algebra.
He had been married since 1948 and had three children. He was a passionate mountaineer.
In 1978 he was President of the Société Mathématique de France . On January 28, 1980 Koszul was elected as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
The Koszul duality is named after him.
