The Bochum Rathaus underground station is one of the crossing stations of the Bochum Stadtbahn . It connects the U35 tram, which runs in the tunnel here, the 302 and 310 trams, which also run in a tunnel at this point, and the 306 tram from there on the surface, but which serve the section BO Hbf - Rathaus in parallel. These lines, like the rest of the public transport in Bochum, are operated by Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG (Bogestra). There is also a connection to many bus routes.

The station consists of three parts; the station of the U35 has the suffix north , that of the lines 302 and 310 south . The U35 station was opened on September 2, 1989, and the 302, 306 and 310 stations were added on January 27, 2006.

Location and structure

The Bochum Rathaus station , located in the center of Bochum's city center, was designed as a complex arrangement of three individual systems, which are arranged in a right-angled triangle. The station of the U35 with the addition of north is the oldest and extends from Hans-Böckler-Straße to Bongardstraße. There this station has a common connection level with the station of the 302 and 310 (south) and at the same time with the basement of two shopping centers. Bochum Town Hall South runs along Bongardstrasse and Willy-Brandt-Platz. It was only opened in January 2006, but has already received an architectural award with the Renault Traffic Award 2006 (special prize from the municipalities) . In addition to the unusual folded ceiling, the light shafts and the glazed and illuminated walls, an underground bridge is particularly important here, on which line 306 crosses the station and stops immediately north of this bridge in a ramp position, but on the surface, at the third station.

history

Route II

Underground station of the standard gauge line U35

The normal-gauge north-south connection (U35) from Herne Schloss Strünkede to Bochum Ruhr-Universität was opened between Herne and Bochum Hauptbahnhof in September 1993, and with this section also its Bochum Rathaus subway station . The underground station is barrier-free accessible via an elevator . He has a central platform.

Route III

Underground station on the meter-gauge lines 302 and 310 with a train on line 302 in the direction of Gelsenkirchen-Buer

This route is operated by the lines 302 (Gelsenkirchen-Buer - Gelsenkirchen Hbf - Bochum-Wattenscheid - Bochum Rathaus - Bochum Hbf - Bochum-Laer) and 310 (Bochum-Wattenscheid-Höntrop - Bochum Rathaus - Bochum Hbf - Bochum-Laer - Witten) drive on.

Since January 29, 2006, the Stadtbahn tunnel under Bochum's city center has been in operation. The streets in the city center are now free of rails. Lines 302 and 310 have been running through the tunnel between the stops Freilrafendamm and Jacob-Mayer-Straße / Jahrhunderthalle since then .

The underground station on lines 302 and 310 can be reached barrier-free via elevators, has a central platform and has the name affix South .

Route IV

Entrance to the platform of line 306

This is not one of the originally planned light rail routes. It is served by the tram line 306. Since, according to plans, the inner city area of Bochum, in particular the Bongardstrasse and Massenbergstrasse, should be free of rails, there was no more space for the 306. As a result, it was considered a candidate for decommissioning and was practically driven for years for wear and tear. However, this changed with the start of construction work on the third and last tunnel section. A connection to the existing tunnel sections was not so easily possible: The 306 meets the tunnel of the lines 302/310 practically at right angles and in the tunnel of the U35 tracks with different gauge ( standard gauge ) are laid. For this reason, an underground bridge was built in the Bochum Rathaus (south) station, on which line 306, crossing the tracks of the 302/310, arrives at Bochum central station and an operating tunnel was built from the route 308/318 at the central station towards the town hall so that the wagons of these lines can get to the tram depot Engelsburg . This operating tunnel was therefore extended and a ramp was built next to the town hall, which leads to the above-ground Bochum Rathaus subway station .
