The Wattenscheid train station was dismantled to a stop at the end of 2007 , it is next to the Wattenscheid-Höntrop stop one of two local rail transport stops in today's Bochum district or the formerly independent city of Wattenscheid .

It is located south of the Wattenscheid city center on federal highway 40 and borders the industrial area West.

history

The former passing track was swiveled to the platform, the platform was widened and shortened.
Of the facilities at the former train station, only two pairs of switches are still in operation as a transfer point. The empty signal box can be seen at the back left.

A station with the name Wattenscheid has existed here since 1874. It was built on a railway line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which was nationalized in 1882. The current station building dates from 1956 and replaced the previous building from the opening year. The new building became necessary after the railway embankment had been raised due to a subsidence in the mountains . The glazed reception hall provided the link between a two-storey office wing with ticket issuance , express goods and baggage handling and the single-storey train station restaurant . The station had ten tracks at that time and was one of two connections between the Fröhliche Morgensonne colliery and the rail network. The Wf signal box, a few hundred meters to the west, was built in 1957.

The station was an independent office until the end of August 1974 . On June 1, 1976, the express and baggage handling closed. In the course of 1979, the office wing was converted into the central cash register of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr , in which the money collected from the ticket machines is accounted for. The restaurant was later leased to a pub , the reception hall only serves as a passage to the platforms. At the end of the mining operations, the freight tracks were dismantled. Today's transfer point was not built as such, but emerges from four points that were retained during dismantling, which also results in the unusual offset of the pairs of points of almost 500 meters.

Track plan before 2006

After the platform-free overtaking track in the direction of Dortmund was dismantled at the beginning of 2006 and the overtaking track in the direction of Essen at the end of 2007 , Wattenscheid station now only has two tracks with a central platform. With the 2007/2008 timetable change, the tracks were renumbered, the remaining platform tracks 3 and 4 have been called 1 and 2 since then. Since the two bridges east of the station were only built for the outer tracks, the usable length of the platform was required from 310 meters to 250 To shorten the meter and to widen it in part. Only about 200 meters of the remaining length have been maintained, which is why it is necessary to rebuild a section of it for the stop of the first trains of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express from December 9, 2018.

In 2008, Deutsche Bahn renewed the tracks, the track bed, signals and overhead lines in Wattenscheid, removed the defective station clock in the entrance area and replaced the two existing ticket machines with a new one. The transfer point has been remote-controlled from ESTW Bochum Nord since 2008 . The relay interlocking at the station has been out of service since then, but is still there. A fast-food restaurant and a kiosk have opened in the premises that have been vacant for years.

Since 2009, further work has been carried out to modernize the line in the area of the station, such as the complete dismantling of the old shunting tracks and industrial connections as well as final overhead line work.

Considerations by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia to include Wattenscheid in the Rhein-Ruhr-Express program scheduled for 2023 were confirmed by Deutsche Bahn on June 17, 2009.

service

Regional traffic

Wattenscheid is served by four regional express lines and one regional train line for local rail passenger transport. In addition to Bochum Hauptbahnhof , it is the only train station in the Bochum urban area where Regional Express trains stop.

The trains on the S-Bahn line S 1 run between Bochum and Essen via the S-Bahn route to the south and serve the Wattenscheid-Höntrop stop instead of Wattenscheid .

Local transport

The stop Wattenscheid station is located about 100 meters away on the railway station road under the highway bridge and in public transport by bus lines SB33, 344, 365, / Vorfeiertags night served by the line NE6 386 and 389 and on weekends.

The tram lines 302 and 305/310 run at the stops August-Bebel-Platz and Höntrop Kirche, which can be reached from here by bus without changing.

Breakdowns

If, due to construction work or other restrictions, operations through Wattenscheid are not possible or only possible on a single track, the trains will be diverted under easier conditions via Wattenscheid-Höntrop and occasionally via Gelsenkirchen main station and will be delayed by 10 to 21 minutes. A track change operation is possible, but is only carried out at low traffic times . In the case of construction-related diversions, a replacement rail service with buses or taxis will be set up.

Particularly noteworthy are the measures taken as part of the switch construction work at the Essen-Kray Süd junction, as a result of which the line was closed from July 17th to 27th, 2009. Since the expansion of all switches at the end of 2007, no trains have been allowed to end in Wattenscheid, but the only line that was supposed to serve Wattenscheid during the work was the Ruhr-Sieg-Express, which runs regularly to Essen Hauptbahnhof, and ends there. In order to enable the hourly trains to be moved, the stop was upgraded to a train station again. The Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn, which also ended in Essen Hauptbahnhof, was diverted and also stopped in Essen-Steele. For the duration of the work, Abellio Rail NRW set up a rail replacement service on the Essen-Steele - Essen-Kray Süd - Wattenscheid - Wattenscheid-Höntrop route, and Deutsche Bahn to Bochum Hauptbahnhof and Wattenscheid-Höntrop.

Station complex

All trains in the direction of Essen run on the northern platform 1, the trains in the direction of Bochum on platform 2. Passing trains pass the station at speeds of up to 160 km / h, in platform changing operations with up to 100 km / h. The transfer point may be driven at 50 km / h when changing tracks. On the 76 centimeter high central platform there is a ticket machine and several showcases with current timetables and construction site information. Part of it is covered and not barrier-free.

Since autumn 2010, the station has had a departure board in the foyer and train destination indicators on the platform. Automatic announcements are also used to inform passengers. There has only been one kiosk in the station building since 2019.

As a park-and-ride station, the station is still of considerable importance for both the surrounding and more distant parts of the city, especially since the Wattenscheid junction of the federal motorway 40 is directly opposite it.

future

Future operation

In order to make local transport more attractive for commuters, the Rhein-Ruhr-Express is to connect the cities between Cologne and Dortmund every 15 minutes. Since the route between Essen and Bochum via Wattenscheid is currently overloaded (including the dismantling of the passing lanes for long-distance traffic in 2006/2007), the stops in Wattenscheid will be reduced from five per direction and hour to two in order to implement this cycle:

The lines RE 16 and RB 40 of Abellio Rail NRW are also to be relocated to the route of line S 1 ( Essen Hbf  - Essen-Steele  - Wattenscheid-Höntrop  - Bochum Hbf ) located on the southern edge of Wattenscheid .

According to current plans, the future routes RRX 4 and RRX 6 will pass through Wattenscheid without stopping, so there will only be a half-hourly service on the routes RRX 1 and RRX 2.

criticism

The district politicians criticized the specific project in Wattenscheid as a stopgap solution at the expense of the citizens. The route via Wattenscheid-Höntrop would be overloaded. Including the increase in the frequency of the S 1 to a 15-minute cycle (2019), the route would then be used by twelve trains per hour (double the train traffic on this route compared to 2018). As a result, significantly higher noise emissions are expected, as the railway does not provide any additional noise protection. There is also fear of mountain damage, as there are many shafts in the area around the station, some of which were created in the wild mining. A prominent example of this is the " Wattenscheid crater ", which caused a sensation in 2000.

From a purely infrastructural point of view, on the one hand, considerable problems are expected with the parking space situation, as there are only about 75 parking spaces available at the Wattenscheid-Höntrop S-Bahn station, which are already unable to meet demand, which exacerbates the parking situation in the neighboring residential streets. At Wattenscheid train station, on the other hand, there are around 280 parking spaces with direct motorway connections and high occupancy rates. On the other hand, around 5000 commuters (2007) use the station every day, including many students from the neighboring vocational schools.

Another reason against the relocation is the low benefit for commuters when the Rhein-Ruhr-Express sometimes no longer serves Wattenscheid. For comparison: an ICE currently needs around nine minutes for the route between Essen and Bochum, the locomotive-hauled RE 1 with a stop in Wattenscheid needs two minutes longer for the same route in the worst case, but it can also be a minute faster. The main reason for this is the low entry speeds on side tracks in Bochum (60 km / h) and Essen. The small time disadvantage caused by the stop could be reduced or probably even eliminated through planned reconstruction work at Bochum's main train station and more powerful multiple units that are used for the RRX. On the other hand, there are around 20 minutes longer waiting time to reach the next train station from Wattenscheid.

One consequence of the reduction in frequency may be that commuters switch to cars, as the majority of the 72,000 inhabitants of Wattenscheid only commute one stop a day to Essen or Bochum. The advantage of the short travel time of only five to seven minutes compared to the car would no longer exist due to the poor timing.

Local politics in Wattenscheid are calling for the relocation of the lines to be stopped and for all four RRX lines to be kept in Wattenscheid. To this end, the disused tracks could be reactivated.

According to statements by Deutsche Bahn in the early stages of RRX planning, all lines in Wattenscheid could be stopped without these measures without any operational effects.

Redevelopment

In 2014, the plans for the renovation, the handicapped-accessible expansion and the creation of the station standard for RRX stops were concretized. Wattenscheid was chosen as one of six train stations in the list of replacements for the modernization offensive 2 (MOF2), which is being promoted by the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Deutsche Bahn. The need for renovation was assessed, among other things, according to the criteria of the condition and lifespan of the stations, number of passengers, accessibility, quality of stay and cost efficiency as well as the connection with other modes of transport.

Specifically, the following measures are to be implemented in Wattenscheid:

  • Accessibility thanks to the new elevator
  • Modernization of the sound system and lighting
  • New construction and extension of the platform to 220 meters (the platform was shortened to two tracks of 350 meters as part of the downgrade).
  • Weather protection
  • Video surveillance
  • Roof renovation

Concrete planning began in January 2016, and work is scheduled to start in 2018. The investment volume is around one million euros. The construction time should be between six and twelve months. Construction work began in summer 2019 and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2020.
