Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
The Cologne-Mülheim train station is located in the Cologne district of the same name and is an important regional train station of Deutsche Bahn AG in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine. The station is divided into a passenger station on the Cologne - Duisburg , Cologne - Wuppertal and Cologne-Mülheim - Bergisch Gladbach lines, as well as spatially separate through tracks for freight trains on the Troisdorf-Mülheim-Speldorf line . Its development goes back to the year 1874.
history
In the 19th century there were still several train stations in Mülheim am Rhein, as all private railway companies had their own railway systems and routes.
The stations of the Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CME, Cologne – Duisburg line ) and the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BME, routes to Elberfeld and Bergisch Gladbach - Lindlar ) were right next to each other on Buchheimer Strasse (near Wiener Platz ).
Only the station of the Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft (RhE, Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf line ) was already at the site of today's Cologne-Mülheim station.
This station only served as a passenger traffic stop until June 1, 1886. With the opening of the route extension from Deutz Schiffbrücke station to Kalk Süd, passenger traffic on the Opladen – Troisdorf line was discontinued.
After the nationalization of the railway companies, there were long deliberations on how the urgently needed merging of the stations should be carried out. The stations of the CME and BME were demolished, the routes swiveled to the east.
Construction work began in 1903, on July 1, 1909, the new station was opened and all goods and passenger traffic could be moved over the merged routes. At that time the station was still called Mülheim am Rhein , as Mülheim was not incorporated into Cologne until 1914 and was an independent town at the time. This also explains the generously dimensioned facility for a suburban train station with four platforms and seven tracks.
Today the station is a hub for regional and S-Bahn traffic in north-eastern Cologne and an important link between regional and local public transport.

Discussion about Rhein-Ruhr-Express
The extent to which the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX), which will replace the regional trains RE 1 and RE 5, will stop in Cologne-Mülheim has not yet been clarified. In 2016, the then North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Michael Groschek announced that this stop would not be served by the RRX. This would mean that there is no longer a direct connection with the state capital Düsseldorf and the time required for commuters increases. From the ranks of the citizens' initiative RRX for Cologne-Mülheim the fear was expressed that many commuters would switch to the car, which would exacerbate problems with air pollution levels in the already polluted part of the city. The Zweckverband Nahverkehr Rheinland (NVR) has now submitted a feasibility study which, contrary to the assessment of the federal government, attributes an RRX stop to be economically viable. An additional track would have to be built so that the stop would not cause any hindrances to long-distance traffic. The NVR study, based also on the assumption of strong population growth in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine, assumes 18,200 commuters per day from 2030, which would correspond to an increase of 4,900 boarding and disembarking numbers compared to 2017 figures.
Training travel center
Until 2017, the station building was the only Deutsche Bahn training travel center in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was operated independently by trainees at the counters. Trainees in the travel advisory department from all over the state spent several weeks here in their first and second year of training. An instructor was present in case of difficulties. It has been operating as a normal travel center since 2018.

At the southern end of the station area, the tracks cross Frankfurter Strasse. There a tunnel was created for the tram , which was given a stop below the railway crossing with a central platform and two tracks, which was opened in 1997 and, like all newer tunnel stations of the Cologne tram, is designed for triple tram trains with a platform length of 90 meters. The platform with the tracks for the S-Bahn was extended to the south, so that an elevator connects the platforms of the S-Bahn and the light rail directly with each other. Both platforms can be reached from a mezzanine by stairs and escalators. The platforms for regional transport, on the other hand, can only be reached through the station tunnel and the reception building .
The two tram lines 13 and 18 are currently running on the route. In addition, the bus lines 150, 151, 152 and 153 of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) stop at the station .
