The Neusser Straße / Gürtel underground station is a station on lines 12, 13 and 15 of the Cologne Stadtbahn , all lines are operated by the Cologne transport company . It is a crossing station between the Nippes tunnel and the Gürtel elevated railway , the outer tangential line of the Cologne light rail.

It was opened in 1974 as part of the biggest construction effort of the Cologne subway : the Nippeser tunnel together with the Gürtel- Hochbahn , the zoo route and the areas Hansaring / Breslauer Platz / Hauptbahnhof - Ebertplatz . It has four tracks, but no track changes. More than 700 trains stop at this station every day.

history

The station with the underground tunnel and the transverse elevated railway line was opened in 1974 . Before that, the now underground route from Ebertplatz towards Weidenpesch had been operated as a tram line since 1882 , and the tram repair shop had given the route a cross-line significance since around 1930 . This has not changed to this day, as there is no technical difference between underground and tram vehicles on the Cologne Stadtbahn . All KVB vehicles are serviced in the tram repair shop in Weidenpesch.

The platforms of the Gürtel-Hochbahn (line 13) were raised at the end of the 1990s from their original height of 35 cm to 90 cm in order to enable level access to the high-floor Stadtbahn vehicles. In connection with this renovation, the frosted glass windows were replaced by clear glass, which made the above-ground station appear much more transparent and brighter. In 2008 the originally very narrow escalators were renewed and widened.

location

The station is located at the Nippes district town hall , roughly at the point of contact between the Nippes , Weidenpesch and Mauenheim districts . It is located on Neusser Strasse , today's Bundesstrasse 9 (B 9) , which leads out of the city to the north on the left bank of the Rhine. The Nippeser Stadtbahn-Tunnel is on the left bank of the Rhine the most used route of the Cologne Stadtbahn. In addition to lines 12 and 15, it is also used daily for emergency trains to the Ford works , as well as for trips to the Weidenpesch tram repair shop.

The intersection with the Gürtelstrasse mentioned in the station name does not actually exist to this day. The northern extension of the Gürtelstrasse has been planned since the 1920s, but has not yet been implemented. The belt is included in the name because the station is part of the belt path of the light rail because it lies at the planned road, and because the belt for cyclists and walkers using dirt tracks along the elevated railway - viaduct even today as a way exists.

The Gürtelbahn (line 13) on the left bank of the Rhine goes around 2-3 km further out of town than the ring route in a semicircle around the city-center districts of Cologne. In the south it begins on Luxemburger Strasse; in the north it is laid out as an elevated railway towards the Rhine and joins the Mülheimer Brücke with line 18 towards Cologne-Mülheim , where they have been entering the Mülheim tunnel since 1997. In the other direction, on the other hand, line 13 dives from Neusser Straße after 700 m into another tower station, where it stops at the tunnel platform, and where line S 11 of the Cologne S-Bahn stops above it as an embankment and offers transfer options.

The belt line is also used daily for incoming and outgoing trains on line 18 ( Vorgebirgsbahn ) to the West depot in Braunsfeld .

Todays situation

  • The distribution level is underground, so if you want to take the elevated railway line 13, you first have to take a flight of stairs to the first basement floor and then climb the stairs or escalators from below to the upper floor or take the elevator up or down to lines 12 and 15.
Here one of the retrofitted elevators
  • The entrances and exits to the street have no escalators.
  • Due to decades of operation with classic tram vehicles , the platforms were originally all designed as flat platforms, but with advance payment for later expansion to high-floor level. At the tunnel platforms you get from the escalator to a height of 90 cm and then have to go down three more steps to the actual platform.

architecture

The station is designed as a tower train station with three levels, where a tunnel and an elevated railway line intersect. At the top, line 13 runs as an elevated railway with two side platforms. With a length of 90 m, these are designed for triple traction and completely covered, but the tracks in the middle are exposed. The roofing is in the style of the 1970s made of coarse concrete, glazed on the outside through elongated high windows.

The distribution level is on the −1 level. There are information points there, a kiosk with a standing café and both escalators and fixed stairs to all four platforms. From there the station has four exits to street level, but there are no escalators here.

The platforms of the Nippes tunnel are on the −2 level. With a length of 90 m, these are also intended for triple traction, but consist entirely of the original 35 cm flat platforms. Lines 12 and 15 run there. The tunnel platforms have remained almost unchanged to this day, the walls are tiled in yellow / blue in the style of the 1970s. In a northerly direction the train appears after about 500 m and continues on street level. The ramp was built in 1974 as a provisional ramp, as plans were made to extend the tunnel out of town - this is also still in operation today.
