The Lohsestraße underground station is a station on lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne Stadtbahn, all lines are operated by the Cologne transport company . It is the southernmost and least frequented underground station in the Nippeser Tunnel and was opened in 1974 : the Nippeser Tunnel together with the Gürtelhochbahn, the Zoostrecke and the areas Hansaring / Breslauer Platz / Hauptbahnhof - Ebertplatz . It has two tracks. On weekdays almost 600 trains stop at this station on schedule.

location

The underground station is located on the southern foothills of the Nippes district under Neusser Strasse between the confluence of the eponymous Lohsestrasse and the intersection of Innere Kanalstrasse. Neusser Straße is not only the main artery of the Nippes district, but also the most important shopping street and cultural meeting place in the district.

On the left bank of the Rhine, the Nippeser Tunnel is the most used route of the Cologne light rail. In addition to lines 12 and 15, it is also used daily for emergency trains to the Ford works , as well as for trips to the Weidenpesch tram repair shop .

history

The station with its underground tunnel was built and opened in 1974 . Previously, the now underground route from Ebertplatz towards Weidenpesch had been operated as a tram line since 1882 , and the tram repair work had given the route cross-line importance since around 1930 . That has not changed to this day, because the Cologne Stadtbahn makes no technical difference between the vehicles that travel as the subway and those that travel as the tram . All KVB vehicles have to go to the tram repair shop in Weidenpesch.
At the southern end of the station, the Cologne city motorway was originally supposed to be built , which has been taken into account through some preliminary work, see also the sub-item architecture . The highway was never built and the plans have since been discarded.

architecture

The underground station is designed as a through station in the Nippes tunnel with two floors. In the upper underground floor, distribution levels are set up at the two exits in the north and south of the platforms, in which information points and kiosks are located. The purpose of the distribution levels is to enable the passenger to choose the direction platform, regardless of which side of the street he is coming from. The platforms of the Nippes tunnel are laid out as the second underground floor, where the trains of lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne city railway stop at two side platforms. With a length of 90 m, these are intended for triple traction and consist entirely of the original 35 cm low-floor platforms. The platforms have remained unchanged today, the walls are tiled in the style of the 1970s in green and yellow. There are escalators between the distribution levels and the platforms as well as from the distribution levels to the street.
During construction of the station, particularly at the outputs of its south side, one went from that toward the partly underground or at its end inside the channel road trough structure to be applied Cologne city highway should pass through the tunnel. That is also the reason for the southern exits, which end in the green areas of the Cologne green belt. There are also static preliminary work in the tunnel with regard to the urban motorway. The reasons for the relatively large distance to the Agnesviertel and the preceding Ebertplatz station can also be found in the plans for the city motorway.

Weak points of the station

  • By Cologne standards, the stations of the Nippes tunnel are built at a large distance from one another; this means relatively long walking distances for the passengers. This is partly due to the plans for the construction of the Cologne city motorway at the time , see also sub-item architecture .
  • Since the separation of the Cologne light rail network into high-floor and low-floor lines in 2003, there is no longer a direct connection from this much -used station to the Dom / Hauptbahnhof underground station or to the other stations of the Cologne inner city tunnel , although the passenger flows actually require precisely this connection.
  • Due to decades of operation with classic tram vehicles, the platforms were originally all designed as low-floor platforms, but with advance payment for later upgrading to high-floor level. At the underground platforms, the escalator is 90 cm high, and from there a small ramp leads down to the actual platform. The fixed stairs, on the other hand, connect correctly to the platform.
