The Florastraße underground station is a station on lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne Stadtbahn, all lines are operated by the Cologne transport company . It is a through station in the Nippeser Tunnel and was opened in 1974 as part of the biggest construction effort of the Cologne subway : the Nippeser Tunnel together with the Gürtel-Hochbahn, the Zoo route and the areas Hansaring / Breslauer Platz / Hauptbahnhof - Ebertplatz . It has two tracks. On weekdays almost 600 trains stop at this station on schedule. It offers options for changing to buses on the road.

location

The underground station is located in the heart of the Nippes district under Neusser Straße between the intersection of Mauenheimer Straße / Florastraße and the junction with Viersener Straße. Neusser Straße leads out of the city on the left bank of the Rhine in a northerly direction, today Bundesstraße 9 (B9) . It is not only the main artery of the Nippes district, but also the most important shopping street and cultural meeting place in the district. The Florastraße leads from there to the Cologne Flora .

On the left bank of the Rhine, the Nippeser Tunnel is the most used route of the Cologne light rail. In addition to lines 12 and 15, it is also used daily for emergency trains to the Ford works , as well as for trips to the Weidenpesch tram repair shop .

history

The station with its underground tunnel was built and opened in 1974 . Previously, the now underground route from Ebertplatz towards Weidenpesch had been operated as a tram line since 1882 , and the tram repair work had given the route cross-line importance since around 1930 . This has remained unchanged to this day, since there is no technical difference made between the vehicles that drive in the underground and those that drive in the tram with the Cologne Stadtbahn . All KVB vehicles have to go to the tram repair shop in Weidenpesch. A few years ago, the station received elevators on both platforms, which enable barrier-free entry and exit to the street level of Neusser Straße.

architecture

The underground station is designed as a through station in the Nippes tunnel with two floors. In the upper underground floor, distribution levels are set up at the two exits in the north and south of the platforms, in which information points and kiosks are located. The purpose of the distribution levels is to enable the passenger to choose the direction platform, regardless of which side of the street he is coming from. The platforms of the Nippes tunnel are laid out as the second underground floor, where the trains of lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne city railway stop at two side platforms. With a length of 90 m, these are intended for triple traction and consist entirely of the original 35 cm low-floor platforms. Except for the installation of the elevators, the platforms have remained almost unchanged to this day, the walls are tiled in gray in the 1970s style. There are escalators between distribution levels, platforms and the street.

Weak points of the station

  • The stations of the Nippeser Tunnel are built at a large distance from one another for Cologne standards, which means a relatively long walk for residents and other passengers. This actually does not do justice to the high density of buildings in the Nippes district.
  • Since the separation of the Cologne light rail network into high-floor and low-floor lines in 2003, there is no longer a direct connection from this much -used station to the Dom / Hauptbahnhof underground station or to the other stations of the Cologne inner-city tunnel , although the passenger flows actually precisely this connection require.
  • Due to decades of operation with classic tram vehicles, the platforms were originally all designed as low-floor platforms, but with advance payment for later upgrading to high-floor level. The escalators to the platform therefore end at a height of 90 cm and connect to the actual platform via a ramp. The fixed stairs, on the other hand, connect correctly to the platform.
