location

A few hundred meters west of the stop is the Cologne Hansaring turnaround station . Here, the S railway line branches off in the direction of Neuss about Nippes and Köln-Chorweiler on the links Niederrheinische distance from, parallel to the Cologne-Aachen high-speed railway guided commuter train route Düren about Köln-Ehrenfeld and Köln-Weiden from .

The stop and the depot together form the western end of the main route of the Cologne S-Bahn . The stop is served by 28 trains every hour on working days and is therefore classified by DB Station & Service in station category 4. The S-Bahn stops here at a central platform that is 145 meters long.

A large part of the platform is on the bridge over the eponymous street Hansaring , on which all entrances lead. In the median of the Hansaring there is a covered path connection between the Cologne Hansaring S-Bahn station and the Hansaring underground station of the Cologne city railway .

history

Northern access to the light rail station under the railway bridge

The Cologne Hansaring stop has a long railway history. As early as 1859, the approach route to the new “Centralbahnhof” crossed the medieval city wall at this point . After the demolition of the city wall in 1881, a wide ring road was created , which in this area was referred to as "Hansaring" in reference to Cologne's past as a Hanseatic city . With the construction of the new main station, the tracks were raised by six meters from 1889. At that time there was already a horse-drawn tram route on the Hansaring, and from 1903 a tram route .

Platform level of the underground station

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Hansaring was tunneled under for the Cologne tram ; the resulting underground stop in a simple lower position was opened to traffic on August 25, 1974. For the S-Bahn , the railway line was extended by two tracks on the north side. This created the S-Bahn stop, at the same time the U-Bahn received a second entrance as a link with the new S-Bahn station and an elevated platform over two thirds of its length . The inauguration of the station was on May 27, 1990. During the 2003 Easter holidays, half of the elevated platform was dismantled to enable the use of low-floor cars in double traction on the ring route.
