The station Lüdenscheid is the terminus of the single-track branch line of Brugge to Lüdenscheid that in Brugge from the Volmetal path between Hagen and Dieringhausen branches. It was dismantled to a stopping point in 2009 and is managed by DB Station & Service in the second lowest station category 6.

The station is located on the edge of the city center of the district town of Lüdenscheid . The only platform extends as far as Bahnhofstrasse and can be reached at ground level. The city center of Lüdenscheid can be reached within a few walking minutes. The Lüdenscheid districts of Grünewald in the north and west and Knapp in the south are also located around the station .

history

Former reception building (demolished in 2009)

In 1880 the railway line between Bruges (Westphalia) station and Lüdenscheid station was opened. Five years later the narrow-gauge railway of the Altenaer Eisenbahn (KAE) district was opened, which had its station below the state train station on Altenaer Strasse in Lüdenscheid. Both stations were connected by a staircase. The narrow-gauge road in Lüdenscheid still exists today, marking the route from the Lüdenscheid train station to the KAE train station on Altenaer Straße.

In 1894, Lüdenscheid had 20,000 inhabitants and, according to archive reports, was the most industrialized city in Germany in 1895 . As a result, the freight traffic at the Lüdenscheid station increased rapidly and was further increased by the KAE freight feeder traffic.

In 1963 a concept of the Lüdenscheid city administration was presented in which there was a plan to continue running today's Sauerfelder Strasse on two levels and the Bruges – Lüdenscheid railway line from Lüdenscheid station with a gradient of just one percent underground. The railway line should then have ended in the second basement at the central traffic junction Sauerfeld in the city center district . In addition, 500 parking spaces were to be created under today's Rathausplatz. At the time, however, the project was rejected as utopian .

Station building

Demolition and new construction

In 2009 the station building of the Lüdenscheid train station from 1880 - expanded in 1898 and considerably rebuilt in 1960 - was demolished. There were two ticket counters and a baggage drop-off counter, a train station restaurant and a passenger waiting room. On the platform side, the architecture of the 19th century with elements in the arched style and a generous platform roof including historical cast iron supports was preserved until the demolition. Instead of the old reception building, a four-story modern building was to be built with a driving school, a magazine shop, a taxi center, a bakery and toilets, in which a waiting room was also planned for rail travelers. The new building was to be built at the end of the bus turning point facing away from the city center in front of the current train stop.

On July 27, 2012, a report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that a new building with a DB service point, waiting room and toilets for passengers could already be realized in 2013. In addition, there should possibly be apartments in the building for students (from the local university of applied sciences) as well as commercial use e.g. B. give with doctor's offices.

In mid-July 2013 there was massive criticism from several quarters from politics and the population that there was still no weatherproof building and no toilets for rail travelers. Inquiries from politics to the nearby university of applied sciences and the tax office opposite, as to whether rail travelers could use these buildings temporarily as a waiting room and toilet facility, were rejected for reasons of discretion and space. For this reason, rail travelers will only be able to get a weatherproof waiting room and toilet facilities when the new station building is built.

At the beginning of March 2014 another report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that construction work on the new Lüdenscheid station building will start in April 2014. The project developer expected the construction of the "Bahnhofsallee residential and commercial building" to take around one year. The first shops and service providers should start operating in summer 2015 and tenants should be able to move into their apartments. A four-storey U-shaped building with an inner courtyard facing the college was planned. The leg of the building parallel to the railroad tracks is only one story and contains utility rooms and garages. It is about a plot of 1019 square meters, of which 500 square meters are to be built over. Five shops, a taxi center and a waiting area on the ground floor were planned. From the old row of shops across the street, a kiosk with a travel agency, taxi center and driving school would move into the new building. A hairdresser, a bakery and a snack bar also wanted to move into the ground floor. In addition to the driving school, a doctor's practice and a personnel service provider were to move into the first floor. The row of shops on Bahnhofsallee should become superfluous after the move and then be demolished afterwards.

In addition, ten new apartments were to be created on the two upper floors. The upper two floors were to be accessed from the Bahnhofsallee side by a staircase and a large elevator. The waiting area, with a public toilet for rail customers, should be managed by the city. In order to get from there to the stopping train, the existing roof will be extended in the direction of the building, and a short roof will also be attached to the building itself. To ensure barrier-free accessibility, a tactile guide strip is installed on the way to the platform.

On October 23, 2014 it was announced that the foundation stone for the new building had now been laid. The new residential and commercial building at Bahnhofsallee 1 was to be built in the next ten months. The building should also symbolize the new entrance gate to the Lüdenscheid think tank. Residents who want to live close to the center or train station of Lüdenscheid should be specifically addressed for the living space. A large part of the residential and commercial space is already rented due to the central location of the building. The move into the commercial and residential units was planned for September 2015.

On November 7, 2015, a report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that the “gate building” at the train station, at the entrance to the think tank area, is as good as finished and is gradually being used. 60 percent of the apartments were already rented at this point in time. It had taken four and a half years from the first plans to the move in of the first tenants. This resulted in a building in which investor Horst Großbötzl (Iserlohn) had ten commercial units including waiting room, driving school, taxi center, bistro or the “Burger House” on 787 square meters and ten apartments realized.

In the meantime, the occupancy of the shops on the ground floor changed. At the moment there is a kiosk with DB ticket sales, the Lüdenscheid taxi center, an Italian restaurant, a barbershop and a currently vacant shop on the ground floor. There is also the public waiting room and the toilets on the platform. (As of July 2020)

Station area

The formerly extensive station facilities with a freight yard were gradually dismantled, the entire area was re-planned and a new single-track stop was built in 2009.

The Lüdenscheid tax office and the German Institute for Applied Lighting Technology (DIAL) are located on the site of the former train station. In addition, a new location for the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences was built by February 2012 for up to 600 students. In addition, other service companies are to settle on the site.

The adjoining Bahnhofsallee has been newly connected to Altenaer Strasse via Zum Weißen Pferd and can now be used for both car and bus traffic. Since then, a footpath has also connected Bahnhofsallee with the upper part of the street Zum Weißen Pferd. Until then, the Bahnhofsallee had been a dead end for vehicles and pedestrians, which only reached the end of the station grounds.

At the end of 2011, 60 elms were planted on Bahnhofsallee and the slope areas were greened. The greening of the Bahnhofsallee is another important step in upgrading the station area in terms of urban development and improving the quality of life.

The square of the new bus station at the train station was named after the chairman of the citizens' association for the promotion of rail traffic and has been officially called "Hermann-Reitz-Platz" since May 6, 2011.

In addition, a six-story medical center was to be built on the edge of the station on the current one-story shopping mall. The projects of the cube-shaped medical center and a new parking garage were supposed to be managed by a planning company. According to the newspaper's report, there was already an operator for the new parking garage. However, these plans had failed in the past. On March 2, 2013, another report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that the city of Lüdenscheid was still interested in marketing the site. A five- or seven-story building could be erected at the beginning of the site, adjacent to the Wiedenhof property. Behind it, the line could be continued on a single storey along Bahnhofsallee.

On April 15, 2017, Dr. med. Dimitrios Panteloglou announced in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that he wanted to build a medical center on the former one-story shopping mall. The house is to be named "Pergamon Center". It comprises a ground floor, four upper floors and an underground car park. It will have a net usable area of 2,640 square meters. The investment volume is around 5.6 million euros. On March 2nd, 2018 it was announced that two doctor's practices, a dental practice, a pharmacy, a medical supply store, a dental laboratory, a physiotherapy practice, a rehab center and a fitness studio will be moving in. A restaurant will also move into the ground floor. 39 parking spaces are to be created in the underground car park. The contracts for the construction project were signed later in August 2018. In the meantime, the Bahnhofsallee had to be partially closed due to the construction work. The goal is for the construction project to be completed by autumn 2020.

Think tank

2011

As part of the “think tank” project of the Regionale 2013 , the station area is to be converted “into a modern education, research and service district”. The Phenomenta Lüdenscheid adjacent to the station area is also to be expanded and connected to the station via a pedestrian bridge. A parking pallet with 400 parking spaces will be created at the station. The connection to the city center of Lüdenscheid is to be created through an improved footpath connection. In addition, there are considerations of locating the adult education center as part of the “think tank” project on the station grounds.

On July 19, 2011, the “Think Tank” project received the third star from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The project is now receiving important funding. No precise data is yet known about the amount of the funding. A light museum and a 70 meter high Foucault pendulum are planned. According to the newspaper's article, the think tank is to become a high-quality educational location that will curb the industry's shortage of skilled workers. On September 25, 2011, the official notification of approval of the funding for the “think tank” project was handed over. A total of 13.7 million euros will be invested in the project at the train station, 12.6 million of which (90% of the total) are funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union . This sum can be used to finance the upgrading of thephenomenta through expansion and renovation measures - including the “lighthouse” and technology center. According to Economics Minister Harry Voigtsberger , the “think tank” is intended to support the young generation's enthusiasm for technology and to make an important contribution to reducing the impending shortage of skilled workers in the regional economy.

The German Institute for Applied Lighting Technology (DIAL) has also built a new building on the station premises. The building now stands next to the building of the tax office. In addition, the city has promised the DIAL an optional area of 3000 m² if it wants to expand again. The foundation stone for the new building at the station was laid on July 13, 2011. On January 7, 2013, the 70 employees of DIAL GmbH officially moved into the new building at Bahnhofsallee 18. According to the company, the cost of the new building was 4.5 Million euros net for 3000 square meters of space below that of a conventional building. Another 3,000 square meters can optionally be used for an extension over a period of ten years, but initially they should only be a parking space for the new building. A false floor in the building leaves space for new technologies, with hardly any new lines having to be drawn, almost everything in the new building runs electronically. The building can also do without radiators, since the warmth of people and PCs should soon be sufficient for complete heating.

At the end of July 2011, it was announced that the timber shop based on the site will probably move to another site on the “In der Dönne” street in the Freisenberg district by the end of 2011 . The site of the timber dealership is now to be included in the planning of the “think tank” project. On September 15, 2012 it was announced that the timber merchant's move to the new 10,000 square meter site at the new location “In der Dönne” (in the north of Lüdenscheider) had begun. The work on the 10,000 square meter site at the new Freisenberg site would have taken a total of two years, including extensive earthworks.

Since September 17, 2011 at 12 noon, Lüdenscheid train station has also been the official start and end point of the historic Drahthandelsweg hiking route .

On November 25th, 2011 it became known that a hotel chain is very interested in building a business and conference hotel with around 100 beds at the train station. The building is to be built opposite today's timber shop. According to the newspaper "Lüdenscheider Nachrichten" from the Lüdenscheid city administration, the property and investment negotiations were still ongoing. The building's parking spaces are to be integrated into the hotel's property. The politicians of the city of Lüdenscheid took note of the project with great benevolence. Lt. the newspaper "Westfälische Rundschau" has the hotel's proximity to the educational quarter at the train station in its sights not only for business customers but also for short vacationers who, for example, are to be offered an overnight stay package with a visit to the phenomena. In addition, the convenient location directly at the train station is a great advantage of the new hotel. By connecting Bahnhofsallee to Altenaer Straße, the connection to the motorway would have been significantly better. On March 8, 2013, another report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that the planning for the new 100-bed building on the station grounds should be pushed forward by the development company. So far, according to the development company, there is still no investor for the ten million euro hotel project. As soon as there is an investor, the plans for the new building will be pursued further. The Phenomenta extension could also give new impulses for the hotel project, according to the article.

2012

At the beginning of March 2012 there was more information about the newly planned parking garage. After a real estate company jumped out of Düsseldorf in 2011 and wanted to build a medical center on site, there are now three new interested parties from the city's economic development agency. According to the newspaper "Westfälische Rundschau", the city administration is currently discussing whether the parking garage should be open around the clock or not. And it should also be decided whether 200 or 400 parking spaces are to be created in the new multi-storey car park. According to the newspaper, nothing has yet been decided on the construction project for the new station building.

On September 14, 2012 it was also announced that the necessary building permits for the partial demolition, reconstruction and new construction of the interactive exhibition Phenomenta including the erection of the Foucault pendulum had been obtained. Now the planners should set about preparing the Europe-wide tender so that the implementation would not stall. The exhibition should continue to run with restrictions during the renovation work. Part of the building would have to be torn down, the inside of thephenomenta would be "turned inside out" and, above all, expanded to accommodate a large café, the main entrance would be relocated to the station side. In addition, the new building is to be built with the pendulum tower at least 50 meters high on the roof. The usable area of thephenomenta is to double to around 4000 square meters. The estimated total costs including the acquisition of the property should be around ten million euros.

According to an article in the Westfälische Rundschau dated November 30, 2012, the building and planning committee of the city of Lüdenscheid wants to tender the Europe-wide tender and a competition for the construction of a new car park on the station premises. A total of around 400 parking spaces are to be built on the urban property opposite the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. The car park with four levels is to be built between the railroad tracks and Bahnhofsallee and architecturally to delimit the newly created bridge space with the transition to thephenomenta. The multi-storey car park is necessary on the one hand to counter the pressure to park in the growing knowledge district at the train station and to provide evidence of the parking spaces required by building law for thephenomenta. 80 of the parking spaces alone are to be guaranteed to thephenomenta. The entire property that the investor wants to acquire comprises 2,620 square meters. Lt. According to the current plan, traffic areas for buses and four bus parking spaces for visitors to the Phenomenta are to be created around the parking garage. Due to the size of the project, the project must be advertised across Europe. With the publication of the tender, investors could apply to the city; The specialist service for economic development and real estate is responsible. Applicants would have to provide evidence that they are technically and economically capable of implementing the project. The process is expected to be completed in autumn 2013. This means that the parking garage should be able to go into operation at the end of 2014 when the newphenomenta opens.

2013

On February 15, 2013 it was announced that the first construction work to expand thephenomenta into a think tank had begun. The science center's workshop moved from its premises next to the cafeteria to the semicircular former stonemason workshop on thephenomenta site. The new workshop is no bigger than the old one, but has an office room with twelve windows. The next step is now to demolish the former Grüber building. The factory hall, in which it all began for thephenomenta at that time, would now have finally had its day. The demolition starts as soon as the weather permits. The schedule for the regional project is tight, and the demolition of the building in March should make way for the extension with its 75 meter high pendulum tower. Where the Grüber factory still stands today, a foundation will have to be poured in the second quarter of 2013. The new building should be weatherproof on it a year later. In March or April 2014, the craftsmen want to assemble the steel frame on the future building of the “Light Museum”, which will later encircle Foucault's pendulum. This is followed by the outer skin, which is supposed to protect the pendulum and the “secondary structure” surrounding it inside. This membrane consists of the same material as the roof of the Munich Olympic Stadium . In addition, the Phenomenta lighting concept is to be improved even further together with the architect from Altena and an office from Berlin.

On April 12, 2013, another report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten that the new “Polymer Training Center” should be built by 2015 at the latest. The still existing paint shop on Lutherstrasse is to be completely demolished for this purpose. The new "Polymer Training Center" is very much welcomed by the planning politicians, as it is also intended to be a new component of the think tank in Lüdenscheid. The new "Polymer Training Center" is supposed to become a boarding school-like training center for young technical talent. For the design of the area around the already existing Lüdenscheid Plastics Institute (KIMW), there will also be an ideas competition. It should give a lot of impulses for the appearance of the boarding school, but also for the whole area between Karolinenstrasse, Lutherstrasse and Bahnhofsstrasse. The participating offices should therefore be selected by mid-May 2013. It is also expected that the institute will be followed by other companies to the location, which is almost entirely planned - including the parking lot on Bahnhofstrasse and Karolinenstrasse, as well as many areas behind. With the boarding school, the KIMW wants to attract young talent for its member companies. Machine setters or designers, also from small and medium-sized companies, could complete longer courses here. Dropouts from vocational training or FH courses also received new opportunities through comparable qualifications. The industry is using it to train young plastics technicians itself.

Since the beginning of April 2013, a new display board at the train station has been providing information about the renovation work on the area there. There, interested parties should be able to get an overview of the area of the think tank. Photos and graphics should show what the future area should look like. The individual content-related modules are also explained there. These include the building of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences , which has been reopened in March 2012 , as well as the urban redevelopment work towards the city center , which will soon begin, and the new 75 meter high tower of the Lüdenscheid Phenomenta , which is to receive a Foucault pendulum inside . The bridge over the tracks should also change the image of the current area significantly. The former train station and fallow area should therefore grow into an important educational and technology center for all of South Westphalia .

At the end of September 2013 it was announced that the planning for the bridge between thephenomenta on Gustav-Adolf-Straße and the University of Applied Sciences on Bahnhofsallee are well advanced. The new bridge is to be 53 meters long and up to 5.5 meters high and have a width of three meters. The load-bearing structure of the new bridge between thephenomenta and the campus in front of the technical college will span the existing tracks at the station in an elegant arc. The bridge is to begin on the FH forecourt with a 6.80 meter wide staircase that tapers to the top like the bridge arches to three meters. The run leads straight to the forecourt of thephenomenta at the beginning of Gustav-Adolf-Straße. The path is carried by two metal arches that are very similar to boomerangs. The new bridge should swing slightly when you walk on it. The elevator, with which all Phenomenta visitors in Lüdenscheid can also get to the bridge without barriers, is to be provided with explanations of its lifting motor or the hydraulic pump. Gustav-Adolf Straße is to be raised a little towards the new bridge in order to keep the resulting slope as flat as possible. At the other end of the bridge, podiums, seating islands and green spaces are intended to create campus flair for the university of applied sciences. In addition, consideration is being given to whether underfloor heating such as on the Stern-Center-Brücke should keep the more than 225 square meters of the new bridge free of snow.

In addition, at the end of September 2013, the planning and construction committee of the city of Lüdenscheid was presented with an initial concept of steles for the think tank district. On the striking steles, visitors should soon be able to read as easily as possible how they are getting to the next attraction in the think tank. This is primarily intended to make it easier for “strangers” to find their way around the think tank district. A local advertising agency was awarded the contract to design the vacancies. According to the planning advertising agency, the foils on the steles can be exchanged for new foils relatively easily when updates are made.

2014

At the end of April 2014, the preparatory civil engineering work for the new construction of the bridge between the forecourt of the University of Applied Sciences on Bahnhofsallee and thephenomenta on Gustav-Adolf-Straße began. According to the plans, the new bridge will be built between June and August 2014 [obsolete] . In order to enable barrier-free use, a new elevator will be added structurally to the bridge.

From a newspaper article in Lüdenscheider Nachrichten on June 10, 2014, it became known that the shell of the tower of Foucault's pendulum should be finished by the end of August 2014. The new tower should be 75 meters high from the roof structure. There was a public inspection of the construction site on Sunday, June 29, 2014. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the public had the opportunity to get an on-site explanation of the Phenomenta construction site. After completion of the shell, a 900 square meter plastic membrane is to be stretched around the tower, similar to that used in various stadiums. The completion of the tower is planned for the first quarter of 2015.

University of Applied Sciences

The new building of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences was inaugurated on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 . The symbolic key for the new building was presented to the representatives of the university Dr. Ali Arnaout from Hamburg's Engel & Völkers Capital AG, who own the new building. The building was erected within nine months by the Lennestadt company Mees. The FH is renting the entire complex back from the Hamburg investor "Engel & Völkers Capital AG". The space for expansion buildings has already been planned in addition to the building complex.

At the end of August 2013 it became known that the plans to expand the university of applied sciences were being pushed forward by the administration.

Lighting concept

There is to be a competition for lighting in the “think tank” quarter (around the station area). The seven locations are: the Christ Church , the facade of the Development and Start-up Center EGC (directly at the train station), the listed power house on the footpath from the police station at the train station to Martin-Niemöller-Straße, the large pendulum tower on the extension of the Phenomenta at the train station, the historic facades along Bahnhofstrasse, the “ Knapper Schule ” quarter square , and the subtle lighting of the path across the cemetery:

  • The illumination of the Christ Church is intended to create an identity and make the 66 meter high building appear as a landmark that can be seen from afar.
  • Thanks to its eye-catching facade, the EGC at the train station is a distinctive building that always looks different from different angles. This should also be the case in the evening.
  • On the way from the Rathausplatz to the Bahnhofsquartier is the listed power house built in 1920, which is also to be illuminated.
  • The town hall also wanted to know from lighting planners how the future Phenomenta pendulum should be staged at the train station.
  • The small facades on Bahnhofstrasse are also to be re-lit.
  • For the "Quartiersplatz Knapper Schule", the lighting is about the historic building, as well as the square area with various uses and path connections.
  • In addition, the path through the Protestant cemetery should be illuminated. It should also be safe to walk on during the “dark season”, also as a direct connection from the station district to the Wehberg residential area .

planning

The Märkische Kreis was aiming for a 30-minute cycle for the Volmetalbahn from Lüdenscheid via Hagen to Dortmund in the future, as Lüdenscheid is the stop with the highest demand.

According to a press release from the responsible authority NWL, the reactivation should not take place until December 2017, this date could be kept. Since the timetable change, there has been a two-hour cycle between Lüdenscheid and Cologne (one hour between Meinerzhagen and Cologne), the travel time by train from Lüdenscheid to Cologne is around two hours. Since 2019 there has been an hourly service.

The draft of the local traffic plan 2016 of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Rheinland provides in the "target network 2030+" that the previous RB 25 will beTemplate: future / in 5 years linked with the RB 24 from Kall / Eifel after 2030 and at the same time replaced by the new S-Bahn line S 15. This new S-Bahn line then no longer runs to Lüdenscheid, but only to Gummersbach. An hourly regional express (line RE 22) from Trier to Lüdenscheid is to be offered on the route .
