The Dortmund Signal-Iduna-Park train station - until December 9, 2006 Dortmund – Westfalenhalle - is a train station in Dortmund near the Westfalenstadion (officially Signal Iduna Park since December 2005 ) and the Westfalenhallen . In order to be able to cope better with the arrival and departure traffic at major events, the station has two platforms with a length of over 400 meters. It is operated by Deutsche Bahn under station number 1297 and belongs to station category 4. It is used by 1,300 passengers every day.
history
The station was opened in 1952 at the same time as the reopening of the Westfalenhalle, which was destroyed in World War II. Five years later, the Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line was threaded into the Soest route with a newly built connecting curve east of the Westfalenhalle station and thus led to the main station instead of the southern station that had previously been used . Initially, the station was only viewed operationally as a stop ( stopping point with connected branching point ), it has only been a train station since 2006. When the Westfalenstadion was renamed Signal Iduna Park in 2005 , the sponsor also acquired the naming rights for the train station, which has also had this name since December 10, 2006. The station was completely rebuilt, expanded and renovated for the 2006 soccer World Cup . Original plans to roof the station with a steel and glass structure were discarded for reasons of cost.
service
Today the station is used exclusively for regional traffic, the lines RB 52 (Dortmund – Lüdenscheid, Volmetalbahn ), RB 53 (Dortmund – Iserlohn, Ardey-Bahn ) and RB 59 (Dortmund – Soest, Hellwegbahn ) stop here . In addition, the RE 57 (Dortmund – Winterberg / –Brilon Stadt, Dortmund-Sauerland-Express ) runs through. In addition to the regular scheduled services, special trains run here regularly to the home games of the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and other major events, where the RE57 also stops at the station.
In addition to the two namesake of the station, the Westfalenhallen and the Westfalenstadion , the Rote Erde stadium , the Westfalenpark and the Bolmke nature reserve are also nearby .
