Swell:

The Ardeybahn is a 38 kilometer long railway line from Dortmund (-Hörde) via Schwerte to Iserlohn ( KBS 433).

Route

Schwerte railway station (Ruhr)

The section between Dortmund Hauptbahnhof and Dortmund-Hörde belongs to the Dortmund – Soest railway line , is double-track , electrified and classified as a main railway line .

The northern part of the actual Ardey Railway between Dortmund-Hörde and Schwerte (Ruhr) is also a double-track main line, but not electrified. The maximum speed of 90 km / h applies.

The southern section between Schwerte and Iserlohn is a non-electrified branch line, single-track with an intersection in Kalthof . Most of this section can be driven at 100 km / h.

A special feature is that in Iserlohn, after the line between Iserlohn and Menden has been dismantled, there is no longer any switch connection to the railway line to Iserlohn-Letmathe . Iserlohn is therefore formally no longer a train station, but only a stop on two different routes. However, the SPNV Ruhr-Lippe special purpose association is calling for a switch connection between the two lines to be provided again. In August 2016, a tongue and frogless connection was installed here. This should make it possible that the Hennener siding for transformer transports can also be reached from the direction of Iserlohn-Letmathe via Iserlohn.

history

After Iserlohn had had a railway connection from Letmathe since 1864 , the Chamber of Commerce and Industry also advocated building a railway to the north in the direction of Schwerte from 1882. Theodor Fleitmann , the owner of the nickel works in Iserlohn and Schwerte at the time , was particularly active against the opposition, mainly from businesses in the Lennetal, who favored a route from Letmathe to Schwerte or from Iserlohn to Altena : He advocated building a railway through the Elsebach valley which the city also supported financially. The district decided, however, that the railway line should be built along the Baar brook to promote businesses in Sümmern, Kalthof and Hennen . After Fleitmann's death in 1904, construction was decided a year later and began in 1907. The money provided by Fleitmann in his will for the construction of the railway was not touched because he had earmarked it for the route he favored.

The construction of the railway line was relatively complex; 200,000 cubic meters of limestone had to be blasted for a cut in Iserlohn alone , and numerous fossils were found. In the further course several dams and bridges had to be built, the newly completed Ruhr bridges were badly damaged by a flood in February 1909 and had to be replaced. Overall, the railway line between Schwerte and Iserlohn overcomes 130 meters of difference in altitude. The construction cost six million marks , 39 artificial structures were erected and around one million cubic meters of soil moved.

The ceremonial opening followed on September 30, 1910, at the same time as the last stagecoach trip from Schwerte to Iserlohn. Scheduled traffic began one day later. The continuation from Schwerte to Dortmund-Hörde began operating two years later, initially for goods traffic and in January 1913 for passenger traffic as well. In contrast to the first section of the route, this was built with two tracks over its entire length .

In addition to Kalthof, today's Ergste stop was also a train station until 1981 and thus another possible intersection . There was therefore a second platform there, which can still be seen today.

Freight traffic no longer takes place today as planned. Sidings are still available in Kalthof (to the Thiele chain works) and in Hennen for occasional transformer transports by RWE to the substation in Sümmern .

Class 624 railcars were used in the 1990s and early 2000s . After the DB Regio NRW won the tender for the so-called " Sauerland-Netz " (which in addition to this line also includes the " Dortmund-Sauerland-Express ", the " Volmetal-Bahn " and the " Hönnetal-Bahn ") won the tender and will thus operate the line for a further 12 years, class 648.1 railcars have been in use here since the timetable change in December 2004 .

The number of passengers in the Dortmund-Hörde - Schwerte section rose from almost 3,000 to around 4,250 between 1997 and 2012. In the Schwerte - Iserlohn section, too, there was an increase in passengers of around 80% to around 1800 passengers per day.

The commissioning of an electronic interlocking (ESTW) at the end of 2016 enabled simultaneous entrances to Kalthof, which reduced the travel time in the direction of Dortmund by four minutes.

Service offer

The regional train RB 53 "Ardey-web" is used in rail transport Monday to Friday operated every 30 minutes and on weekends at hourly intervals between Dortmund and Iserlohn. The average speed in both directions is around 49 km / h.

Local rail passenger transport is carried out by DB Regio NRW , which uses DB Class 648.1 diesel multiple units in single or double traction at speeds of up to 120 km / h. The reinforcement usually takes place in Schwerte. As a substitute, diesel railcars of the DB class 640 and DB class 628 are occasionally used.

When the new Sauerland network went into operation at the end of 2016, the regular timetable in the Schwerte – Iserlohn section was rotated by 30 minutes, resulting in better connections to Münster and the upper Ruhr Valley Railway. At the same time, the 30-minute intervals in the Schwerte – Iserlohn section were extended by five additional journeys from Monday to Friday. With the timetable change on December 10, 2017, the frequency Monday to Friday between Schwerte and Iserlohn was reduced to a continuous 30-minute cycle. In addition, the morning offers were expanded on Saturdays and Sundays by one pair of journeys between Schwerte and Iserlohn.

future

As part of the new tender for the Sauerland network, DB Regio has again won the operation of the RB 53 line for twelve years. With the start of operations for the timetable change in December 2016, new Pesa Link vehicles were originally intended to be used. Since the new vehicles cannot be delivered on time, the existing vehicles should continue to run there until the new vehicles are ready. Some new vehicles are already running.

Planning

  • In Iserlohn a switch connection to the line to Iserlohn-Letmathe is to be installed again.
  • In Schwerte, possibilities are to be examined to shorten the long service life of the trains in the direction of Dortmund.
  • In the long term, it is also planned to offer 30-minute intervals on Saturdays.
  • Electrification is also planned for the Dortmund-Hörde - Iserlohn route. It should also be checked whether it makes sense to set up an additional crossing point.
  • Measures to increase capacity and quality are required for the Dortmund Hbf - Dortmund-Hörde section. For example, the almost two-kilometer section in the run-up to Dortmund Central Station, parallel to the line to Witten, is currently only used on a single track by twelve trains (RB 52, RB 53, RE 57, RB 59) per hour. In addition, the regional rail transport advisory board of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is calling for block consolidation in this section of the route.

Remarkable

The route does not have a single level crossing, but there are many overpasses and underpasses, even for the smallest dirt roads, the single-track route partly runs on high embankments.

The Kalthof train station in today's Iserlohn district of the same name is still called Kalthof (Kr Iserlohn) after the municipal reorganization of January 1, 1975 .
