Sümmern is a district of the city of Iserlohn in the north-western Sauerland . At the end of 2019, Sümmern had 6050 inhabitants.

history

Stone Age finds in the area of today's Iserlohn suggest that settlements were established there long before the Middle Ages.

In the annals you can read that in 1180 the place on the site of today's Sümmerns came under the administration of the Archbishop of Cologne after the fall of Henry the Lion .

In 1204 a place called Sumberne or Sumburen is mentioned in writing for the first time and the house of Sümmern is documented transferred to a Gerlach . Until the 18th century, the landlords managed to protect their rights (for example their own criminal and court jurisdiction).

From 1802 to the end of 1974, Sümmern became a municipality in the former Menden district , then in the Iserlohn district . On January 1, 1975, the place was then divided between Iserlohn and Menden . By far the largest part with the main town is assigned to the city of Iserlohn as a district of the same name. The little Ostsümmern comes to the city of Menden.

A town partnership was established with the French municipality of Laventie in 1964, which was officially sealed in 1967. In the course of the municipal reorganization , this was transferred to the city of Iserlohn eight years later.

construction

Sümmern essentially consists of three parts, the old part with the town center, the new development area and the industrial area. The new development area - but sometimes also completely Sümmern - is often called the "cherry blossom village", because at the right time of year lush cherry trees bloom in the park, on the roundabout and on the surrounding lawns.

In addition to Griesenbrauck, Sümmern also includes Bilveringsen on the border with the city of Hemer and a parcel called Wulfringsen on the edge of Kalthof .

societies

There are several clubs in Sümmern, such as B. the Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastian 1842 eV Sümmern and the Sportfreunde Sümmern.

particularities

The Catholic Church of St. Gertrudis, renovated in 2017, was Sümmern's spiritual center for many years. On the church square there is a memorial in memory of the victims of the war of 1870/71 and the First World War . In front of it a commemorative plaque commemorates those who fell in World War II . It was donated in 1935 by the Sümmern political community.

The only Baroque building in the entire Iserlohn city area is still the Catholic Kreuzkapelle above the cemetery (also called St. Antonius Chapel). It was donated by the lord of the castle von Sümmern, Freiherr von Syburg and received its benediction in 1767.

The youngest church in the Iserlohn area is the Evangelical Kreuzkirche in Sümmern, which was consecrated in 1967.

The head office of the Dornbracht company is located in the industrial area . Armaturen u. a. design and manufacture for bathroom and kitchen.

Also in the industrial area is the indoor inline skating hall "Zoom", which is mainly the training location for the inline hockey team IH Samurai Iserlohn, but can also be used on some days for a fee.

The Drepper farm, which has been owned by the family since 1792, continues in the direction of Halingen . The residential building and the older part of the Landmarkt are under monument protection. The Drepper family has been running a market with u. a. Meat and vegetables, but a large part of Sümmerns buys its asparagus there at the right time of year.

Even further in the direction of Halingen is the memorial stone to Emil Rittershaus, the author of the Westphalia song .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the former municipality of Sümmern contains - like that of all municipalities of the former Menden office - a " cow iron " above which a golden bar is depicted. Above it are three silver roses on a red background. Both the bar and the three roses come from the family coat of arms of the Sümmern family . The coat of arms was approved on April 15, 1937.
