Kalff coat of arms

Kalff is the name of an extinct Estonian noble family that originally came from Sümmern in Westphalia .

The family is not to be confused with other families of the same name Kalff , as they occurred several times in the empire , especially not with the Rigian Kalff, who were also different in tribal and coat of arms.

history

origin

The origin of the family of the Estonian Kalff can be found in the Westphalian rule Sümmern , where a family named after the rule with Johann von Sümmern gt. Stockebrant, documented 1394-1414, found its presumed origin in the male line. His daughter, Sophia (Fya) von Sümmern, wore the rule to her husband Adolf von der Recke († 1430/1431).

The noble Hembrock court was the ancestral seat of the Calf von Hembroke family, who were mentioned in a document in the years 1257-1410. Hembrock was always closely associated with Sümmern and reunited with it at the latest in 1528.

Both families lived in close proximity, had a coat of arms related to each other and to the Estonian Kalff , often gave the first names Arnold and Gottfried and provided parts of the name of the later Estonian Kalff. Because in the beginning these appeared in the Baltic States under the name Summern gt. Kalff . The guiding name of the Estonian Kalff, Dietrich, also appeared several times in the 14th and 15th centuries with the von Sümmern family.

Spread and relatives

In 1394 the above mentioned Johann von Summeren gt. Stockbrant registered as guardian of the children of his cousin, his nephews Johann and Helwig von Summern. This nephew Johann was to be identical to the one who acted as guarantor for Hinrich Schlippenbach in 1404 , who was documented again in 1409 as Vogt of Narva .

Johann von Summern, in his Westphalian homeland, had little prospect of the future, like many of his compatriots went to Livonia or Estonia during this time. Since his presumed son Dietrich († before 1483) inherited the Saage estate in Harrien from his brother and father in 1467 , Johann von Sümmern should have already owned it there.

Mertin Kalff had already sold the farm and the village of Koik from Gut Sellie in the parish of Rappel to Godeke Dönhoff in 1433 . With its putative brother, the above Dietrich († before 1483) which begins regular series of Kalff . In 1447 he sold the village of Sontacke to the Mariendal monastery, in 1453 and 1470 he became an assessor at the Commander-in-Law in Reval and in 1463 he also sold the land at Soentacken, but to Heinrich Junge.

Of his two alleged sons, Hans was a man judge in Harrien in 1479 and a believer in Hans Slyppenbeke's 1492 before the Harrischen man court in Reval. In 1476 Ludwig sold the former Fahrensbach estates Waddemois , Korwentak, Heymel and the village of Kocker to Hermann Lode († before 1516).

The next generation belonged to Dietrich II († before 1551). He was the most outstanding person in his family. As early as 1489 he was master of Poll, in 1528 owner of all three shares in Pöddes and still owner of the village of Urdias in 1546. In 1529 he appeared as a bailiff in the diocese of Ösel-Wiek and in 1534 he received a feudal letter from the master of the order Wolter von Plettenberg about his estate Pöddes and the village of Aszeryn. In 1539 he had to go to court with Harmen Lode over Pöddes. He was an influential and respected man of his time. Even today the Estonians call Pöddes Kalvi after him . Although he had two sons who had lost their lives, the gender found its real end in their generation.

Jürgen Kalff must have died uninherited before 1581, his older brother Dietrich III. (1581/1586) carried his paternal inheritance in his will to his nephew Reinhold Engdes . Regardless of this, Pöddes was given to Hermann Flemingh by the Swedes while Dietrich was still alive .
